Going from 6V to 12V...

I'm taking the liberty of posting on behalf of my friend JJR. He just scored an original 356A VDO tach gauge that he plans on eventually installing in his car. Of course originals are 6V and his car is a 12V. How do you make those gauges work on a 12V VW? I imagine some of you have tackled this. Thanks...

Not sure that it was much of a score for a replica application. The tach on my old '62 356B Porsche Karmann Coupe was cable driven (mechanical) and was not electric powered --- save for the lights which are easily changed. Been years but recall the cable came off the distributor drive. Palto Alto Speedo can redo the tach internals but costly.

Checko out the 356 registry site (www.356registry.org) and look under '356 technical info' - below is a link to a 6 to 12 volt conversion article from that site:

In a nutshell it says you need to get the tach professionaly converted. I think I recall seeing this same info stated in the 356Talk forum as well.
