Jerry:

If you get a catalog from Rocky Mountain Motorworks (now Mid-America motorworks - ask for the air cooled VW catalog) there are a number of manuals in the back that are all pretty good.

In order of goodness as best I know it:

Any of the Robert Bentley service manuals

VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia Manuals by Haynes

How to rebuild your Volkswagen Air Cooled Engine by Tom Wilson

One of the many Chilton's Manuals

One of the many Motor's Manuals (if they are still in print)

Most of these can be found on Amazon, but if you can get a Mid-America catalog or order them online you can get them all at once. I doubt that you'll find much at your local book store, but they can usually order them (just like Amazon).

You can also check the "knowlege Section" of this website - there is a true wealth of info there.

Also, order a Gene Berg catalog.......there is a wealth of info in there (along with a lot of editorial comment - some of it quite good) about air cooled VW engines that shouldn't be missed, along with a ton of high quality parts, and another must-have is a CB Performance catalog.

good luck!
