Got my 914 Gauges Re-faced..

WOW - they look outstanding!

Hartmut from Palo Alto Speedo refaced them with a green 356 "style" silkscreen. He does great work. I am very happy with the result. They are like new front to back.

Do they have indicators for high beams and turn signals?

I can't see them in the photo.

Can you give us an idea of the cost?

I had the same set of gauges redone by Palo Alto. They look awesome but the bulbs in mine aren't very bright and there is no way to adjust the brightness level. Consequently, at night they are very hard to read.

Thanks guys. They do have turn signal indicators and a high beam light. They cost around $800 for everything (refurbishing,added dampening to the tach and the silk screening). It isn't cheap but I didn't want to go the replica vdo route and couldn't stand the 914 orange faces.

Ron, I saw yours on a post which prompted me to send them off.

I will have to check to see how bright they will be at night although I rarely will be driving it then.

Did you look into swapping out bulbs?

There is a thread on theSamba about using LED lights in VW speedometers. The best solution seems to be installing strip LEDs around the circumference of the instrument.

There old website had more Porsche stuff. I was thinking about having them reface my gauges.

Harmut rocks. I've given him a lot of money over the years, and have never been disappointed.

Henry told me, after the fact, that Palo Alto will install LEDs, if asked. Since I didn't know the lights in my gauges would be dim while driving at night, I didn't order the LEDs.
For me, it's not worth adding LEDs, since 95% of my driving is during daylight hours.

Bosch offers two lamp wattages for the same bayonet base - 4 watt and 6 watt. I don't think you can tell the difference by the number on the base (if there is one), but you could try some 6 watt to see if they're brighter before you try the LED route. Also, repro gauge cans use the same depth tubular stand-offs for all lights, both indicator and back lighting. Original German gauges had stand-offs about 1/4" shorter for the backlights, pushing the lamps closer to the face and making them brighter.

I got mine done too. Last year. They came out great, and the lights are bright at night. I'm very happy with the job Hollywood did.
