"dampener", huh? Make sure you put the top up then.
While you're putting it in, test the tightness of the tie-rod ends on both sides, as well as tightness of the pitman arm and all related stuff.

I am getting one at Carlisle from Lenny's if they have one, seems like mine might be bad.
Wow...what a difference. The old dampener was the cause of all my front end problems. The old dampener still had quite a bit of tension although it would have points in the travel that had none, then back to tension. This is what made my wheel wobble, once it started the dampener wouldn't be able to stop.
Best 35$ and 15 minutes work in a long time.
