Going to be shotting some grease on the ball joint on the stick shift. its creaky and doesnt seem to be much on there. The grease on there is red in color. is there a specifc type i HAVE to use or will the same grease I grease axles with work?

That should work. The red stuff is probably multipurpose grease.
Any good #2 grade should work....As I don't know what you use on your axles....
If weather exposure is a problem, search for a grease used on boat trailers, as its a little more water repelent.... My .02...
Wheel bearing grease would be perfect, as it'll stay thick-ish when it gets hotin the Summertime.
Beyond that, just about any automotive molybdenum grease will work just fine.
Just did mine. I used wheel bearing grease. Lubed the new shift rod bushing with it too!

Radio Shack sells tubes of Lube Gel that stays in place and doesn't dry out. Odd but true. I use it on many things, never disappointed. Most clerks say they don't carry it, but it will be hanging on the wall. I just used it last night on carb linkage. Comes in a white tube. FWIW.
