Am I supposed to have a sycro on first gear? It is completely not there. I can't down shift from 2nd to 1st until the car is comlpletely stopped. All other gears work fine. I bet I am.

Actually now that I think about it. About 50% of the time when I am cornering and I down shift from 3rd to 2nd I get a grinding, like the reverse lockout isn't working and i'm rubbing up against reverse.

Talk about being upset, by the time I get it back up to 3rd and find (????) second I'm already around the corner coasting to a stop on the straights. If I get too slow on this manuever, I ultimately have to come to a complete stop because I have sycro for 1st.

The more I post, the more I think it is time to just tear this thing apart and start replacing stuff. Any suggestions/opinions would be great.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can downshift from 2nd to first, am I right? Also, with these cars you need to be gentle on the downshifts. I learned that the hard way over 20 yrs. ago when I was younger. The synchros had to be replaced in my Ghia's transaxle because I wasn't careful enough downshifting and I was getting the same grinding you are experiencing, especially when downshifting to 2nd. My mechanic basically told me that I needed to take it easy when downshifting. Somehow I sense that your synchros are already gone but after reading your other posts on your clutch situation maybe it's engaged most of the time and that also can contribute to what you explain.
Its a 1970 IRS. At least thats what my documents say.

Heres another stupid question. I've never done any research on it, but aren't all rear engine cars independant rear suspension? Don't they have to be? Anyway what does a swing axle look like? I have what apears to be CV joints and shafts on mine. Not that I've taken those apart yet, but they are touching the transmisson which means they are going to need some kind of work.... just kidding (I hope).
OOPS, I almost forgot. The shifter itself is black, straight, and too long in my opinion. I can sort of feel the gear notches when making shifts, but it seems loose to me. It also has a perforated leather knob /ball which I'm guessing is aftermarket. I think the trasaxle is stock for the donor car, and I would bet the shifter is also, but I don't know how to tell what brand the shifter is.
You can adjust the shifter by loosing the two bolts that hold it to the tunnel and by trial and error make sure the shifter is in the proper location relative to the linkage. You may need to blip the gas to "match revs" in the trans and engine which makes the trans slip in gear easier depending of what shape the trans is in.
