That's the VS supplied bumper grommets? I used pre'68 Bug ones. Had to make fiberglass opening a tad larger and cut off where it would overlap the original metal fender opening.
Like Greg, I used the pre-68 grommets. Cut the lip off the back so they fit flush to the body, then shot the area between the body and the bumper arms full of clear silicon caulk, then pushed the grommet up to fit against the body. The caulk keeps the bumper mounts (arms) from vibrating.
thanks thats not what I have, I must have the other ones like they have used or simular, I havent seen them a 2-3 years but know I have them.,I kinda like it going through the body so the bracket dosent chafe the glass. thanks for the pic.
TDR,
What you have in your hand in the photo looks like what is used around the trunk hinges where they go into the cowl, not the bumper brackets. Do you have something there? Bumper bracket grommets look entirely different,
Bruce / TDR:
Those are exactly what are on the front of my 2002 VS as well. They don't attach to the body. Previous owner secured them with thin black zip ties around the bumper bracket that sandwich the grommet between the body and the zip tie. You have to look close to see that, but that was how they were secured against the body. I'l try and get a picture and post it, but there isn't much to that fix.
I don't have them on the back either, and have to get a pair. I think SoCal and MidAmerica have them pretty cheap in the VW section. I'll just order 4 and that way they should all match.
I am inclined to go with the same tacky set up until I get ready to paint and then when that is done, if there is enough flex in them to allow some movement, silicone them to the painted car.
