This is probably the first time I've disagreed with Carey. My opinion is this, several ground straps makes for a better electrical system. 12 volts DC must travel a continous loop and only having one ground strap limits the circulation of current. Every time you turn on the key, 12 volts of DC current "fills the wires" withing your electrical system. Personally, I like at least 2 if not 3 ground straps. It makes for brighter headlights and faster charging via the alternator. The difference may not be readily visible but tests have shown that the more ground straps on a vehicle makes for a better functioning electrical system.
Even in a stock Ghia, there's a ground strap from the trans to the frame horn and a second from the base of the generator stand to the negative battery terminal.

With all of the oil inside the distributor hole, I never trust the electrics to be grounded through the distributor body. I always run a short ground from the distributor clamp to one side of the generator stand and another from the other side of the generator stand to the starter bolt.

Just as a safe guard.
Even on a vehicle with few electrical accessories, I use two ground straps (e.g. spyder, etc).

Yes, you only NEED one, but that one needs to always be perfect. If it's not #2 is cheap insurance. For cars with multiple electrical accessories, add ground straps - it often cures a variety of ills.
