who makes the replica guages that all the builders use can we (joe public) buy from them direct? prices in the UK are crazy. you guys over here dont know how lucky you are.

With the great exchange rate (for you) --- come on over (Carlisle?) and take an extra suitcase of parts and accessories home. Friendly tourist always accommodated.

A lot of our gauges came (originally) from VDO in Brazil. Then VDO seemed to close there, and a couple of other companies took over production, but the overall quality declined. For instance, the overall finish wasn't quite as good, and many internal parts that had been metal from VDO suddenly became plastic (on my Speedo, you have to be dead stopped BEFORE you can zero the trip odometer - if not, you destroy the trip function!!).
Then it seems that those knock-off companies closed in Brazil, and the next source came from Taiwan. I expect that we'll soon see knock-offs coming from mainland China, too.
I looked far and wide when I was looking for gauges and couldn't find a direct source, so I finally gave up and ordered a set from Vintage Speedsters in Hawaiian Gardens, CA. They weren't cheap, and the trip odometer's dead, but the rest work OK.
I think that, if I were building another car now, I would probably look for some 914 gauges in a salvage yard or on E-bay.
Another source for you (but not necessarily cheap) is Palo Alto Instruments (or Palo Alto Speedo) as well as North Hollywood Speedometer. Both repair old stuff as well as sell new and repros.

From what I understand, they are Chinese replicas of the Brazilian VDO replicas....they are manufactured exclusively for Vintage Speedsters and JPS and you can get them from them.
those gages come from a company called West, Inc. I called them once to see if I could buy them and they told me to just buy them from Kirk at Vintage.
I got mine shipped to the UK from Vintage. The quality isn't too bad, and they are more 'authentic' than most of the gauges sold in the UK
Steve, don't know if you still can wait a bit longer but I can offer you a complete set of repro gauges within one or two months. I will replace the ones from my 2000 IM Speedster for originals. It all depends on how much time the SVA test will cost this month. As soon the car is back in Holland (I live in Amsterdam) I will start to work on the dash.
