What are the alternatives when looking at guages for a speedster?

I know a lot of people use the 914 guages, others use the VDO guages and senders.

The guages that came with the kit I bought are perfectly good. However, they are the rather modern looking black faced cockpit series (no offence Ben). I think I would like to go with something that looks more retro (like the VDO heritage white series), but I want to first check out what other suitable guage makers are out there.

I have 6 holes in my dashpanel (2 big and 4 small). Therefore, I believe I am going to have the speedo, tacho, oil pressure, oil temp, fuel guage and voltmeter.

Has anyone ever used any different guages from other manufacturers? How successful were they? Were there any issues with compatibility?

Thanks for any information.

Jim

PS If anyone is interested in the guage set I have got, send me an email. I have to start making some income, to cover all my recent financial outlays, or the 'bank manager' is going to come down hard on my speedster activities!

Jim , Palo Alto Speedometers in Calif. has different colored gauge faces. You could easily convert and add chrome bezels like I did. I did stay with the black gauge faces though... it's a bit more racey. I did not forget about your template..... been very busy with travel. It should end soon. The time I have at home is with the kids and wife ... and two hours with the ol hot rod (speedster).
Joe,

Thanks for the feedback. I had heard that PAS was the sort of place that required mucho beer tokens!

Are they really worth the extra money over the VDO guages?

PS No problem about the patterns. I too understand the time constraints that you describe. Luckily, my travelling is now somewhat less since we moved here from Europe.

The advantage of travel in Europe is that you can easily travel to other countries and return in the same day. I used to do a regular trip from London to Ford in Germany, near Koln, just like that. Another trip to a Ford plant in Saarlouis, in Germany, would require flying into Luxembourg and then driving about 30 miles to the plant in Germany via France!
