A big shout out here to Carl Berry for pulling off what I thought might be impossible. Keep an eye on him at Carlisle as I think he may be a pretty smooth talker. There's been a Samba ad for a while from South LA with a fella selling off a few Speedster Hardtops. Price only $200 ( above $1,400 elsewhere ) new shells and a few used ones. Not to put anyone out of their way, I priced packaging and shipping to upstate NY where I could slide over the border and collect it. About $900 I think it was. While I was doing this stupid dance, Carl was working away quietly and smooth talked the vendor into packaging them up and shipping us each one via GreyHound Bus for $150 each ! How cool is that ? I'll get Carl a few cool ones at Carlisle for sure. Nice one, Carl...good on ya !  As an aside, I was surprised to see that GreyHound will take items ( reasonably packaged, not necessarily crated) in sizes up to 30"x 46" x 80" .

Yup, I learned lately that Greyhound is a nice option. I was at the Boston bus terminal last Saturday picking up four vented rims that I bought from a guy in San Jose. Two big boxes. $86 to get them here.

Oh, when I bought these wide 5s they looked as if they were painted silver -fine with me. Got em here only to find they're chrome. Thick layer of dust on them. Not bad for $60 (for all 4).

I'll look into having a mold made ( too busy to do it myself and I hate FG anyway ) after we see what it fits. I do have easy access to a room full of end grain balsa mat which is/was normally used in FG boat building. At this point I don't even know what rear window it will use. Should be a fun project though. One thing that comes to mind is how to stiffen up the side windows to make a nice fit onto the side of the roof. The top edges of my existing side windows are more or less contained by the flap type canvas part on my convertible roof.  Some kind of sound deadening will have to get done too. I'm looking forward to it. The nice thing is, the hardtop will provide a lot of room in the back seat area with the convertible roof put away.

BobG,

Actually the vendor had five hardtops. The others appeared to be metal factory options for 356 cabrioles...Though visually similar they have a different windshield to door edge height, and rear deck mating configuration.

As for fitting and finishing these glass tops, David has some good ideas...plus he bennifits from the mystical fabrication suggestions of the Horse Shoe...so I'm going to pay close attention to his progress.

Nice looking top, Ger. Looks to have the same type of rear window that Carl Berry's roof has. Different than mine which has not arrived yet. So, did you do just a trial fit? I'm curious how well it sits on the windshield frame and roughly, how is the fit at the back? Do you know what window will fit the back? Here's a couple of very small pics of mine. Quite different on sides and rear window.

Hi Dave,

I did quickly drop the top onto the car but I have seatbelt risers for 3 point fixing  (uk requirement), and they kinda get in the way !

I need to either do some lowering on the riser, or do some mods on the top, (I think thats where I will go, I quite like 3 point belts) See first pic....you can make out the mounts at shoulder height)

I have the back window and rubber for it as well, (Lexan, already curved/cut to the opening)

Bob,

I'm in Scotland.....I got it from Gary at Speedster clinic .

See second pic for one of his tops mounted on a customer car, (not mine!). I understand that this car was a daily driver here in the UK for a number of years, (hence the need for a top  !)
