The early IM fiberglass body had the heavy steel perimeter frame too. Your custom frame is probably as strong the original VW pan which really just has the center tunnel for strength. The thin floor pans don't add much. I'd stick with the custom chassis.

Unbelievably he responded and was the builder “long, long ago” when he had a shop in Marina Del Ray. Hopefully I can get some info from him on the methodology behind the suspension and transmission choices. Thanks for the tip Robert!

I'm glad it worked out. I guess this just proves that even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while.
