When I built my car, I didn't realize that my buckets would be resting against the paint without a gasket. I'm sure I could cut off a lip and bond it to my car but I would prefer a less involved solution.
I'll post pics when I get home.
Any ideas?

Several of us use the OEM 356 headlight gasket (from Klassee356). Its kind of T shaped - flip it so the leg (short) of the T goes in the gap and the smooth rubber part seals around the head light. Looks better than a gap. I posted photo - didn't try to look for that thread - but here's photo's again. The rubber does crack over the years but it isn't expensive.
EXL5.0 | Seal, Rubber. Headlight To Fender. Fits all 356 Models. | $6.75 |
The answer is they don't keep the bucket from touching the paint. They fill the 'edge' around the bucket and make it look better.
I just someone would make them out of a better material! They all crack way to early. That goes for aero mirror and tail light gaskets, too! Maybe some sort of silicone material would work better.

That is true. The type that Vintage uses are nothing like the T shaped ones and they wrap around the edge of the chrome ring and do keep it from touching the paint, but the only place you can get them (that I know of) is from Vintage.
Troy, do you have a pic of the gasket that Vintage sells? I looked on their site and it was not pictured.

The part Carlos posted a picture of is available at Vintage Speedster Parts. Their website offers no description of what it is for but that looks exactly like what I have on my headlight buckets. You could always call if you have a question.
You are correct on how it fits on the edge of the chrome.
My gasket was joined to form a circle. The Vintage Speed one isn't. That shouldn't be a problem. Just put the seam at the bottom, it'll be covered by the mounting tab.
As far as looks, I haven't seen the other type. Yet. The fit is ok, but it pooches out a little in places. I'll see if I can take a picture of what I mean. Being a first time replica owner, I'm finding some details need a little refining. It doesn't help that I have an artistic background and I like things "just so".
But hey, I can't see it when I'm ripping down a mountain road with my hair on fire, so all's good for now.

And that's all that matters, Carlos!
It's not horrible, but you can see the gasket not laying flat against the chrome on the side. I should've taken a picture of my right headlight, it sticks out a little more. This doesn't bother me as much as the gasket on my rear grill. That one is a joke, but so is the grills themselves.
Like I said before, I'm a little picky..........
Carlos, I don't have gaskets on my grilles, it looks better without on a Spyder.
I used to run a gasket on my lights, but after they disintegrated I didn't bother to replace them.
Fender shape on Speedsters is different than ours, Carlos. The gaskets fit MUCH better on Speedsters.
