As part of getting my car registered here in Ontario I need a safety check. Among a few things my car needs are high beams. They have never worked since I owned the car, the switch on the stalk does nothing, doesn't even make a clicking or switch noise. Also, the wire going from the headlight switch to the headlights gets pretty hot so I figured now is the time to hook some relays up for the lights. Those of you who have done this, do you fuse the + wire going from the relay to the lights or the positive running to the relay? What size fuse? (H4 halogens) Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Here's a diagram for relays.

There's a good chance your dipper switch is fine. When the wires aren't right or the fuse is blown, the switch does nothing--not even a click. You need to locate the wires that come off it though.
Thanks for the reply. So the low beams are also on when the high beams are on, correct?
Dimmer relay toggles between one or the other, doesn't run both at once. The dimmer relay isn't shown in that diagram, but it would connect to the two "stock wire" connections.
So, to recap, when the low beam is on, the high beam is off and vice versa.
I suspect that there is a dimmer relay somewhere under your dash that is not working. If you contact Henry at Intermeccanica, he may be able to tell you where they put it on your car. Once found, you'll have to test to see if it is getting power from the dimmer switch on the steering column stalk to make it "toggle" from low to high beam - if it's working, then with the key "on" but the engine "off" or not running, you should be able to hear it click when you pull the dimmer handle.
There should be five wires coming from the dimmer relay: One for each headlight 'beam' (high or low), one for the stalk switch, one to the fuse panel and one to ground. I bet that the one coming from the stalk switch is somehow disconnected, or the wire to ground is disconnected.
Start with an email to Henry about the location of the dimmer relay and go from there.
NB Make note there is a schematic at intermeccanica web site that might shed "light" on this subject. Been there done that and today is too hot to play golf.

this schematic"wiring diagram" must be scaled up to read. Trace color coded wires to connections. Your eyes are probably better. your photos are showing relays. Good luck JVE Proud parent of a convertable "D" with electric volvo seats patent pending.
Well, the good news is that you've found the dimmer relay - The 111 941 583
As to where those wires go, I would have to trace them out (and you will, too!)
IM's site says its down for maintenance. Been like that since at least yesterday.
This site has a quick test for checking if the relay is working:

I'll have to give it a try, thanks!
Fixed. 3 wires were not connected up. No idea why they were not connected but it was before my ownership. I also got windshield washers now courtesy of a child's zippy cup from the dollar store for $1.25. Its just gotta spray water when they test it.
Fired it up yesterday. Funny engine noise gone (loose #5 instate valve), no overheating (worn and loose fan belt), good oil pressure, #6 cylinder temp about 250 which I think is okay. Just gotta get the windshield back on and then its likely ready for safety check. Still lots of things to do but isn't that always the case?
The big question is why you paid $1.25 for the cup at a "Dollar" store? I think they screwed you LOL
Inflation I guess. There's actually not a lot of stuff in there for $1.
