Just made a down payment on a new engine and there's only room for one engine in my Beck Speedster. A fresh, professionally built 1911 Type IV was initially installed and just fired up last July. It was so much fun I managed to put 3000 or so miles on it during that time before putting it to bed for the winter. Many of you may know the story, it's been documented in Shop Talk Forums in the Type4rum section, "Type IV into a Beck Speedster". It's a fine running (and looking) engine, I've got plenty of videos and photos all within the other forum and more if you need them. It was built with a Cali upright conversion with all tins powder coated black.
Weber 40's. It currently has a 1-5/8" Tangerine exhaust that has proven to be somewhat problematic for low end power. I'd suggest downsizing to 1-1/2" A-1. YES, I bought Oscar's-Raby 2666. It'll be delivered here in a week or so and then the transformation will be taking place over the next several months. So, the 1911 should be available within a month or so. The original was out of a 1.7 914. I just wanted more power, engine is basically brand new. Plenty of photos to see right here within my profile too.

Rich, you're almost at that precipitous decision point again -- whether to tell your daughter to go to school for another year and come to Carlisle -- or watch a boring graduation ceremony.

(I'm here to tell you, kids her age forget things like that in minutes. Heh, heh, heh ...)
Alright, I've compiled the hand written invoice description of work verbatim. A couple of things pertain to my actual installation. The labor cost listed below does not reflect that work. I could e-mail scans of the invoice to any interested party showing prices for all individual parts. Specific manufacturers are not listed but I can probably find them out. Most parts were new. I could probably have my mechanic answer specific questions if needed. Local builder, excellent reputation with local Porsche guys here. FABSON AG

Inspect and clean engine parts, assemble 1911cc engine with all new bearings, Web-Cam 86A camshaft with new gear and lifters, have engine parts balanced, replace valve guides and perform valve job, clean up ports to match gaskets, modify rocker arms for 911 valve adjusting screws, install heavy duty oil pump and oil control pistons, have head fly cut for 96mm cylinders, install rocker arm spacers, modify engine tin for upright fan housing, sandblast engine tin and send out for powder coating, modify alternator stand and weld to base plate, modify engine pulley for Type 4 engine, modify oil cooler adapter, make up oil lines for oil cooler, install new Weber 40IDF carburetors, install rotary fuel pump, cut and fit aluminum sheet to engine compartment, install MSD ignition, modify transaxle mount to fit exhaust system, install new flywheel and clutch assembly, repair threads in steering wheel hub, adjust steering wheel box, modify right rear spring plate, perform 4 wheel alignment and adjust ride height, adjust carburetors and timing to get engine running, change oil and filter, adjust engine valves, make exhaust reducers, modify engine lid.

Close to $3700 in engine parts
Approximately $3300 in quality labor

PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.

This is a Joe Cali style upright conversion.

Total-$7000...so, make me an offer please.

Engine will not be available for 30 days or so depending on my mechanics schedule.

During my 3000 miles of driving since last July, driven in different climates, the engine runs extremely well with ABSOLUTELY NO COOLING ISSUES. The engine currently has a 1-5/8" exhaust system which has caused some issues with the tune. I have been told by some that a 1-1/2" system would probably rectify those issues. At this time the future plans were to try different jetting and more tuning in the spring.
Rich-

It's customary, when selling something, to name a price. Telling folks what you've got in something doesn't mean as much to them as it does to you.

You might be thinking, "Hey, I've got $7K in this, and it's got 1K mi on it. It's worth $6999". Alternately, you could be thinking, "Yeah, I've got $7K in this, but nobody else is likely to pay anything close to that for a sub 2L Type 4 they didn't get to spec or build. I'd take $500".

What you are thinking is probably somewhere in between. You'll need to name a price, or this ad WILL go away eventually.
Precisely Stan. I AM hoping for somewhere in the middle, that's why I DID mention within the ad to make me an offer. That's sort of a common way of approaching a sale I thought. I know I'm not going to get what I have into it, but feel most of the audience here has a sense for what it's worth and if interested would make me a reasonable offer. Personally I just don't think there's much of a market for anything right now. I'm just happy I'm not trying to sell a house. An engine in my garage I can live with for awhile. Am I being an annoyance with my comments to keep the ad from going to the bottom of the list? If so, I'll stop the practice. And, no, I'm not taking $500. You think I'm nuts!? Though I may have the madness.
Speaking as a guy who buys a lot more stuff than he sells through websites... a price is pretty much required, even if it's "$XXXX, OBO". It gives people an idea what you are thinking is fair. Otherwise, they have no idea what would be insulting-- and nobody wants to pay more than they have to for anything.

You're right about it being a buyer's market.

Sometimes, it IS best to sit on something you'll take a beating on. I've got a 2110 with 2500 miles on it on a pallet in my barn. I've got north of $5500 in it, and I'll bet a donut it wouldn't sell for more than $2500. For $3K, I decided 2 years ago to keep it.

... good thing, too. I bought a '64 panel last winter, and the 2110 will be going in this winter or next.
I know selling this engine is a long shot in today's conditions. If someone really has an interest they will come forward. That's how I got Oscar's engine. I made a friendly introduction with him and he remembered me. He got back to me on his own terms and we struck a deal. Perhaps the same thing could happen with me. After all, the thing has only been up for sale for what? Ten days or so. If someone is looking for a good deal on a decent fresh engine, they'll get in contact with me. I'm feeling positive vibes. BESIDES, this is a Type 4 engine, not just your run of the mill type 1, let's get with the program gentlemen :-) And it ain't going for no $500 :-) I find I have to keep adding all these happy faces to make sure people don't think I'm so serious :-) about my comments :-) So, as the headline says, this is a heads-up on a 1911 Type 4. Make me an offer :-) a decent offer :-) $500 won't cut it.
Stan, I'm not asking anyone to guess. I think it's pretty obvious to all that I paid $3500 in parts plus $3500 in labor (rounded off). Let's play Pawn Stars, I'd love to get $7000 (the museum curator just spoke), and I just paid that. Well you ain't getting that, Rich (says "the old man"). Well, what would you offer me? (asks me). Alright, HERE, I want $5500, I say, who wants to pay me $5500? (Chumly stands on the side smirking). Someone? Anyone? No one wants to pay me $5500? Make me another offer then. So...there's a number-$5500... Everyone happy now? No? You don't like that number? Make me an offer. Oh, ya :-), :-), :-). I won't be offended by an offer, it just ain't going for $500 and probably somewhere shy of $6999. :-) And now this ad is still near the top of the page unless I get pulled for insubordination. :-)
Rich, if you know what you need out of it, that's what I'd list it for.

I'm assuming it's only going down the river after the new one gets a rated gearbox or an upgrade to your car's other systems; if that's the case, why not spec the new gearbox or your upgrades, see what they'll set you back, and then list the engine with a price that makes you happy?

Haggle from there until the price winds up being what'cha actually NEED out of it?
Rich: I am interested of course but rather seriously paranoid these days. To begin with I got the JCS engine a Typ1 but it was the most highly engineered 1914 cc that they offered. The cost was $4,200 turn key. It included the following

1914cc TK Rb 041 Hd Dual 40 E. 3,279.00
A.500 Powder coating YELLOW 249.00
9506 THIN LINE 3.5 Quart Deep Sump 139.00
9420 55 Amp Alt upgrade 79.00
Misc Color Kit blue 49.00 49.00T
9700 Compufire Ignition Module With Bosch Coil 59.00
9430 Electronic Engine Balance 139.00
SHP Crate Turnkey Shipping Crate 37Lx41Wx32H 75.00
SHP Freight Motor Freight Shipping & Handling 200.00
9403 Counterweighted 69mm Crank 120.00
Misc NEW Eagle 110 Cam with HI Performance lifters & Gear 110.00
Misc DYNO TUNE $225
Misc oil cooler kit with fan, 11"X11"X 11/2"170.00
Misc Full-Flow HD oil pump 0.00 0.00T

So there is a lot of study and education I have to come up to speed on replcing the engine. One way is to discuss the details with you. Then go to some of the other professionals such as Art Thraen ACE and the folks down near Helen GA.

So as a first salvo, please give me a call at your convenience and we can get started sorting this thing out. The Roller is in Saint Augustine and my mechanic John Anderson who is prepared to install any engine I send him that fits a Beck like yours. If you check my registry you can see what options the speedy has.

Anxiously awaiting your reply.
