This makes reference to a 912 dirver and concerns "The Maestro" in Cali, but the flapper heater box reference is of possible use to you.

Eberspacher. I own the core unit. Never installed it. I live in Dallas, need I say more. You can buy them. They install under the bonnet. Have a gas line that goes in the tank. Produce awesome heat. Turn it on, and it will sweat you out. They are safe, but sound like a bomb.
This is a related topic and I know you don't have heater boxes but for those who do; the difference in air flow between the aftermarket 36 hp style fan housing and the OEM VW is like night and day. When I had the 36 hp style installed and I pulled on the heater lever in the car the air coming out of the vents was almost negligible. After swapping the fan housing I get serious air flow coming out of those floor vents. If you consider putting on heater boxes (check out adevertisements on Hot VW's magazine; they're being offered at very reasonable prices by some advertisers) it will make a difference. If you are concerned about "restrictiveness" of the units get the 1-1/2" diam units from CIP (I got the pair for $189.95); manufactured by Dansk (I believe the OEM manufacturer for VW) and exactly the same as the stock units otherwise.
