I did a search on the Samba and saw that the original arrangement was for the spring to go between the lever and a punched out place on the under cylinder tin.

Unfortunately, my aftermarket tin doesn't have this feature. That probably is the case with others here.

What would be a good alternative for attaching the spring?

I have the "universal" heater boxes with the short lever pointing up from the top. Is there a way to make use of this for the spring?

There is some kind of spring inside the heater box that I can't see.

It pushes the flap closed. Do all heater boxes have this internal spring in addition to an external spring?

Or, does the internal spring mean I don't need the external spring?

Thanks.
