Heater Vent Covers for 1978 IM

I bought some of those metal sliding covers from Stoddards -- they do not fit in the hard plastic opening in the floor where the heat comes out -- the hard plastic openings seem to be bolted into the floorboard. Anyone had luck with trying to cover those heater openings properly? My cardboard covers are not doing her justice.
