Hi Tim from England, i think this site is great and the info that you pick up from it is really useful. Is there anybody that can help me. I'am considering changing the seats in my speedster and was hoping to choose between replica speedster seats with the slots in the back or 914 seats with the headrests cut off. the 914 seats seem more comfortable than the others because they are slightly wider in the base and taller in the back. Can anyone give me their views and can any of you guys email any pics of both types of seats whether in or out of your cars.
thanks alot .

here's mine- fiberglass with leather. Not installed yet, but they seem a bit flimsy(flexible), could use some stiffening?! I'm 5' 8" 160 lbs (I'll let you do the conversion) and they seem about the right size, so if you are a big man you'll prolly want more room. I sort of like the old style VW seats (no headrest) which I may get for my Super beetle.

Hi Tim--welcome to the Speedster Owner's club---a lot of insanity here bet also a lot of great info.

I was not satisfied with the lack of comfort with my original seats. They were the standare Vintage ones--somewhat like the previous pictures as far as the fiberglass shell of the seats. I found some 914 seats on this site and was planning to install them until I realized that the cushions from the 914 seats would fit perfectly in my Vintage shells. I took my old cushions and the new 914 ones to an upholstry shop and had the original cushion covers switched to the Vintage shells. Voila--perfection!

I drove 650 miles two days ago and was comfortable as can be with my new cushions.

The reason that the new seats are so good is that they are much thicker in the rear and that lifts me up and away from the sides of the shells that were cutting my backside.

Simple solution and solved my problem easily and perfectly. Here are some pictures.

Tim,
The seats William posted are speedster/spyder style seats.
The type of seat really depends on your driving style and butt displacement. I drive fast on curvy roads and have no ass, so the Speedster seats are great. The side bolsters hold you in place and they sit nice and low.
The 914 seats have a little more cushion and lack the bolsters so there's a little more room for the rear but they lack a little in lateral support.
The Cadillac of seats are the roadster seats, as in Dale Bates' beautiful IM Speedster. Very cushy for long drives and plenty of room.

Here's a pic of my seats:

Tim---just the cushion that you sit on, The cushion that fits into the seat shell. It lifts out just like the seat cushions (or the part you sit on) on the original Vintage Speedster seats.

I got measurements of the IM seats which are truly the premier seat around but my car is pan based and the space was not wide enough to fit the IM seat.

650 miles last week in perfect comfort is good enough for me. I used to squirm to try to get comfortable now the seats are fine.

I had my wife make me two pillows--like throw pillows --pretty firm and not "mushy'--about 18" square conered with coarse, thick canvas. One goes between my right leg and the gear shift and the other between my left leg and the door. This eliminated the stress I sometimes experienced holding my legs straight---not splayed to the left and right. It makes a comfy ride!
