I've been on here for a month and posted a few times, but I thought I'd do the obligatory hello post.

I say hello from Atlanta but I'm actually in a northern Atlanta suburb, Alpharetta.  I'm in my late 50s and have been a total car and bike guy since I was a little kid.  I own my own business, a violin shop, and I am a trained luthier.  (There's one for you to look up.)  However for the past 15 years I've almost completely forsaken cars and have gone the bike route, averaging 15K miles a year on either BMWs or Ducatis.

Until June of last year that is... riding home one morning from Asheville and a weekend on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I had a guy in an F150 run a red light and T-bone me at about 50mph.  Thank God for proper gear, as the witnesses all thought they'd seen a fatality.  Still I had a laundry list of problems...  an open compound fracture to my left wrist and forearm, a dislocated right shoulder accompanied by a broken acromium, torn rotator cuff, and brachial plexus nerve injury, and four breaks in my right ankle all have made this last year one of mending and relaxing.

I'll have permanent impairment in both the left wrist and right shoulder and arm, but I've bought a bike already, a Triumph Street Triple (what a great engine) and I'm riding again.  Still, I can see that a migration back to more four wheel activity is in order, and I've decided that a replica Speedster would make a fun toy to take up my time.  I also think it'd look cute sitting in front of my shop.

I really wanted to go to Carlisle last week as I lived there for four years while I was in school, but I'm still not up to sitting in a car seat for the 12 hours it would have taken.  Maybe next year!

Anyway, I'm glad to have found this site, and I've already learned a lot from reading here.  I look forward to getting to know some of you, either through here or at shows, and I'll thank you in advance for everybody's kindness and help.

Good Morning Mark! I'm a newbie myself and wanted to say welcome. My wife is who told me who a "Luthier" was a while back. She's a piano teacher. I'm glad you came out of your accident and got back to riding. I think you should have gotten a Bonnie (much easier on the old bones, let alone old healing bones, lol) My name "A2WheelCpl" is because we both ride. She has an 06 thruxton and I have an 07 Bonnie Black. Ohhhhh and an 08 Beck Carrera on its way, LOL.

What's the (possible) big deal about a poster painted baloon?? So I enlarged it 300% to see if I'm missing something.

I've got to visit my optometrist

If that's a balloon that's great, but I see something else. Then I'm one sick puppy...

It's Folks like you and me with impairments that make me wish a automatic 4 speed was available Mine has the  type 3..  3 speed automatic .. crude but ok except for long revs in second  I wonder if a Subaru  automatic could be adapted to work with a Vw engine. I love the vw sound with a 74 stroke and bigger valve heads  it has a era  correct sound  But that stroke and the T-3 automatic are not good combos for a long life engine you need another gear to control revs better. I hope you look into that I think it would help.

Thank you all for your replies.

Lane, count me in for any meeting you guys arrange. I'd love to attend and look, see and learn.

Troy, let me know if you find my avatar offensive and I'll be happy to change it. I have three avatars I use on various boards, a very funny albeit R rated one, this one which I'd rate as a PG13, and one which is more G rated.

A2WheelCpl, lovely bikes the twins but just not right for me. I'm even considering the 1290 Super Duke when it comes out.  I'm afraid speed on both two wheels and four has been in my blood for a long time. Good choice on the Beck. From everything I've seen it's a quality piece.

OldYeler, while I definitely have some permanent impairment, I can still drive a stickshift. My problems show rhemselves when I have to either raise my arm above my shoulder, or with fine motor use of my right hand. One of the cars I'm considering is an SAS, so while I'd have the option of an automatic, I'll probably go with the 5 speed.

I'm just VERY surprised that Theron has not already changed it!  There was a recent discussion about what is and is not allowed on the site and a photo that I posted at Easter of two breasts, painted with a bunny face and ears was deleted.   My personal feeling is this.  I'm not offended by it and I hope I don't offend you, but I don't see it as funny, just tacky.
