If that had been for sale when I had my 2276 type 1 built.....damn!
Does sitting for 6 years hurt these things?

If everything is sealed up properly it's probably fine, but it's been assembled for a number of years so it needs to be checked out. For starters, it should turn over smoothly. Then I would want to take the heads off (check for rust in the cylinders and that the rings move freely) and pop both pistons out of 1 side just to look inside and make sure nothing's rusty, and if it doesn't look good be prepared to spring for the gasket kit. Remember, this isn't a Raby assembled engine; he did the balancing and machine work (as well as supplied his DTM shroud). Jason (the seller) did the assembly and the ad says nothing about what cam is in it or who did the headwork, so there's still some questions to ask. I would also be asking if it come with the engine tin.
I'm not saying it's not worth it; just know what you're buying.
$5,000.00 for a motor that now you have to take apart and see if it's good and hope like hell you got your money's worth?
Didn't someone on this forum buy an new Raby engine that had been sitting around for a while?
Raby engine, no? ALB--you're saying Raby would machine and balance the engine parts then send them to some knucklehead to assemble? Cuz that doesn't sound like the man I see post on these and other forums.
I bet this seller is doing what a lot of people do: when they pay someone to build something for them they later tell people "I built that." Donald Trump "built" a lot of hotels and other crap that way.
Ed- I just read what was in the ad. The guy said he was the builder, and Jake did the balancing and case work (again, that's what it says in the ad). Maybe he doesn't do that kind of work any more for enthusiasts, but there was a time when he did.
There's also no mention of the cam or what headwork it has, and to hit 140hp it's gotta rev to 5500 or 6,000rpm with power. All I was saying is that more questions need to be asked, and it needs to be checked out with a partial teardown. 6 years is a long time for an engine to just sit, and even in a (so called) dry garage, parts can rust if an engine isn't sealed up tight.
Yes, I bought a Raby engine that sat for somewhere near 12 years. It was opened up, inspected for much less cash than Mr. Raby wanted to do the task. It was determined to be road worthy after fixing a few minor flaws, reassembled, installed and has given me two years, so far, of plenty of power.
