Hey guys, I need some help here. I am experiencing a problem with my Speedometer. Here's what happened.

1. Today I took the car on it first extented highway run since I bought the car (about 40 miles at about 65 mph in 50 degree weather).

2. After I got back in the car and started home I noticed that the speedometer was making a clicking noise and that it was not responding to an increase in speed.

3. It seems as if the speedo was bound up on something.

4. The clicking got worse (louder/faster) as I increased speed.

5. I took the back roads home and the clinking continued all the way home (about 40 miles).

6. The speedo seems to still work (e.g., it moves up the dial as I increase speed), but its not responding in a smooth fashion and clicks as it goes along.

Ok, any ideas here. I am a bit stressed out b/c I just got the car and have already had a few things go wrong with it. I am sure it's simple stuff, but I am sure you guys can all understand.

Please give me a hand figuring out what the heck is wrong.

Thanks.

Dave

Check the left front hub. Remove the wheel and check the dust cap. The hole in the middle should be filled with a square key and a washer that holds it in the hub. Depending on what year your car is if you have this set-up that is your speedo cable. It's connected to the front hub. Can work loose if someone was playing with it, especially during build up. If that checks OK look for the connector on the back of the guage.
It may be the cable is binding inside the housing. Sometimes an application of speedo lubricant will do the trick. Take the cable off the back of the speedo and squirt some of the lubricant down the housing. It may take some few miles of operation to totally free it up. This is fairly common on a car that hasn't been driven much or infrequently. Worth a try and it may work, inexpensive also. Bruce
Cable may need lubrication, cable may be fraying inside the housing and need replacing, housing may be curved in too sharp of a radius or kinked, or cable may be coming loose from the speedo. Sometimes a cable may be too short (or housing is too long) and cause this problem.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. Question - ... would this problem just start up... I drove the car for about 40 miles, park it, got back in... (as Emiral would say...) bam! there was a problem...

Does this makes sense... would the problem show up just like that... The car only has 1300K on it....

Thanks for the continued input.

I took the advice of the forum and removed the speedo gauge from the dash. I drove the car to see if the speedo cable was spinning ok, and it seemed as if it was. I took the gauge into the shop and the check it and reported that it was functioning.

I oiled the end of the speedo cable and reinstalled the gauge. Everything seemed to work. The shop said it may have been b/c the gauge got hot (hwy driving).

Any thoughts from here?....

Thanks

Dave
