Hey guys, so i'm looking a two speedsters. one is a vintage built in 2012 for 25k with a 1915. looks really nice. the other is a cmc that was built in 1992 with a 1835 for 18k. i live in ca. so i've heard it's not that hard to register it as a special construction car. (it's not yet, and will have to do that). anybodys thoughts?

I would probably spring for the VS, but I wouldn't touch either without a trusted inspection/test drive.
I just bought a VS built in 2016. It first sold to a guy in Arizona. The Arizona " pink" says it is a 62 VW. At the DMV the guy who verifies the VIN didn't even look at the Vin number on the pan. He said I needed to go to the CHP to have a new vin assigned. He said it is olbviously not a 62 VW. I called Kirk at VS for advice. He suggested I go to a private party to do the registration. It is now registered in CA. My concern was special construction designation might have resale and smog consequences. As for engine size the 1915 cruised over the grape vine at 70mph with no problem.
thanks guys. so the people that do the registration for you, register it as a vw or a special construction?
Unless procedures have changed, special construction registration in California must be done by the registered owner. Registration companies can't do it.
in my case 62 vw just as it would have if registered in CA by first owner. look in phone book or google vehicle registration services . much easier than DMV
special construction goes though CHP
Post some photos. The CMC interior was very basic as delivered plus many are now 30 years old. A nice VS replacement interior can be had for $2k.
Aren't there only 500 Special Construction cars allowed per year in AC?
Bob. I'm not sure why you thought you needed to take your car to the DMV, but that was a BIG mistake!
In California, if the title you have received from your seller says VW, you just take it to the DMV (not the car) and you're done.
In California, if your title says anything other than VW, your only option is an SB100 and unless your non-VW title is from Beck or IM, you might just be screwed.
Troy, are you saying that if it is a cmc they wont give me a sb100?
went to CAAA first and because it was out of state title they said I needed to go to DMV Went to another registration service and they registered it. The guy at DMV was freaked out by the arizona title said it was a 62 vw and didn't look like one. he didn't even look at the vin number.
the seller said he will smog it, so i would have two years to try and get it registered. i did it years ago on a cobra i built, but i dont know if things have changed.

"DMV was freaked out" That's why you don't take your car to the DMV. When you went into the DMV, you must have told them something that caused them to send someone out to look at it. In California, if the out of state title says VW they just register it with no questions asked.

No, I'm NOT saying that, but you will quickly find that getting an SB100 is not just signing a few papers. There is a lot of documentation about the build required and that can be difficult to provide as well as costly, but not impossible.
Search the SOC for SB100 information and read all of it.
i just read the sb100. it looks to me that in order to get that, you need to build the car yourself, (or someone in ca. not a mnftr. of the car) in ca. once its built and registered somewhere else, than you cant register it in ca. as a home build.
No intentions to break this great thread, but I have a questions about AZ registration. Currently, living in SoCal, it was so convenient to buy my 2013 VS directly from Kirk and have him do the CA registration under a 62 VW. Does anyone know the process with the DMV of AZ? There is a high probability I'll be moving to Prescott, AZ in the near future.
Dukewagon,
Yes, if you want to register your replica as Special Construction with CA DMV, you will need to sign a form that says you built the car or had a substantial input into the build. I did register my out-of-state replica using the SPCON SB 100 method. It did take a few days, as you need to visit DMV, CARB, and CHP. The intent of the legislation is to register cars like ours, many of which are illegally registered as 1960's VW's. For a VW registration to be legal, the car itself must still be recognizable as a VW, such as a Baja Bug, or big fender mod. If you want/need more info, PM me.
I did the SB100 thing, it wasn't that bad. It did require several trips to DMV with receipts, a trip to CHP and a trip to the smog referee. They only allow 500 per year but the rules also say that if you don't get it one year you can register Special Construction and try for SB100 the next year or at any time later.
hey guys, now i'm looking at a nice looking JPS for $22.500, or a older (1992) CMC that i will have to try to get it registered in CA. for $17.500 they both have low hr. 1835's of course the JPS is in alot nicer shape, but the CMC is a good looking car, and a good price?
I would take the car that has already been registered in California.

You can chew up $5K pretty quickly trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. $17.5K for a car that needs work doesn't sound like a good price in that light.

Or you can have this new Vintage Speedster, with no production wait, still under warranty, priced under factory cost and has it’s initial 200 mile teething issues worked out. New VS Speedy. Just sayin!!!

Stan is right... you can easily spend 5K and you can still be in need of a paint job etc etc so do your homework and compare ... I think it goes like this ...Pay me now and drive off and enjoy or pay me later and keep working on it for a few years just saying
@Bob Hampton I went a few weeks ago to transfer the title to mine. I was in and out in a few minutes. I didn't drive it, nor did they ask to see it. Then again, it was already registered in CA.
@dukewagon
I personally saw Theron's speedster before it was ready to sell. Even at that time, the car was great. If i were in the market, I would pay attention to that vehicle. Brand new speedster with all sorting complete.
As YOGI says: "90% of the time, your half wrong, the other 10% of the time your HALF-RIGHT
Looks good! Have fun driving that bad boy top-down along the coast.
