I just purchased a 1978 IM with a new engine and a dual set of Dellorto Carburetors, which seem to need a rebuild as one of them tends to make Poping noises and will complely kill idle after a good long drive (more than 1 hour). Problem is my local VW shops won't touch the Dell's and I have contacted a Carb shop that will do it if I buy the parts. CB Performance told me the size and model is on the side of the carb. All I can see by sticking my head in there is "made in Italy". Where is the model number and do I need to start taking it apart to figure this out?

I have Dells and they're great; over at The Samba forum mharney rebuilds them as well as Art Thraen. You can get most of the parts from CB Performance. The model no. is on the outside of the carb towards the bottom right of the main carb body; you'll see a number likely starting with DRLA (down draft which is what VW's or Porsches use); it will most probably either be a 36, 40, 45 or 48, you can even get 52 but they're more rare).
Ed,

If the shops you are visiting can't work on Dellortos, then I suggest you never go to those shops for anything. If they don't know Dellorto then they don't know Weber, and therefore they don't know anything about the probably hopped-up engine you have.

But don't worry about that, you can easily do a better job keeping your carbs in tune than you can pay someone else to do.
You just need this book: http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=2
This tool: http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=572
And a couple of screwdrivers.

The book covers all the models and sizes of the Dellorto carbs. And, if the VW Shops you were going to were any good they would have copies of the book right there on the shelf for you to purchase. The book will tell you more than just about the carbs, it will tell you a lot about how the engine does what it does to run well.

And, as said above, if you have 2-barrel carbs they are no doubt model DRLA -- and the size (36, 40, 48, etc.) is stamped on the side of the carb. It is stamped on one of the barrels, on the side of the carb that has all those screw adjustments and the fuel hose hook-up (as I recall).

Get the book!!!
