I took the plung and bought a 2002 Vintage Widebody on ebay, here's the link. cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=6428&item=2417985531 I plan to pick this car up in Tampa and driving it back to NY. I'll be honest, I don't know exactly what I bought and would appreciate any helpful information, links to arcles, and comments on my purchase.

Thanks, I look forward to contributing to the club.

Ah,
This car has been moved around, originally the seller CrazyToyz had the car listed along with another one with all kinds of outlandish claims. It was made by Porsche as an authentic reissue, body was a mix of fiberglass and carbon fiber, I can't remember the rest. I do remember the price, $45,000. We all had a good laugh as it was relisted and relisted on ebay.

It's most recent listing is still on their site, price dropped to 35k and the outlandish claims gone

BTW, that guitar you picked up has some real character, great display item.

I bought Larry's last speedster Scott, so I can vouch for who you bought it from. He's a real car nut and did everything he could to aide me in the purchase and shipping of the car.

As far as driving from Valrico to NY, I'd think twice about that long a drive in a speedster that is fairly new. You also have to contend with a lot of bad weather that just pops up this time of year (like the DC area thunderstorms today that reeked havoc on air travel in the mid-south.

Good luck with the new toy!!
You are in for one of the rides of your life. Take a good tool box and pick up some parts like sparkplugs and points, a cooler and a waterproof car cover, or tarp, just don't take one of those blue plastic tarps, get a classy one, for the rain storm you WILL find on the way, be sure to take all the two lanes up the coast and not I95 all the way. there are some great little towns, seaports up there. Ive, crossed the country several times in great sportcars and meyers manx cars, no tops at all, and had fantastic rides. Take your time. really now is the time to take that extra time to do it right , or just ship the car and take the first ride when you have plenty of time to take the two lanes. Good luck with your new car, there is nothing better than a speedster. David Barrett in fresno
Thanks to all,

I made the trip with only minor insodents; however I learned some things about the car after getting a few hours down the road. This car was lowered by the "dealer" that misrepresented the car when Larry bought it. I don't know how they lowered it, but it really needs to be returned to it's normal height. The steering linkage gets in a bind when steering hard left, and it appears that the left wheel is about an inch behind the right (rough measure from the fenders, not chasis). I'm not sure what it will take to correct all this, any input is GREATLY appreciated. I will be taking to a VW suspension/cahsis place as soon as I can find one. The car goes down the road very nice, handles good, and looks great. Needs carb adjustments.

I know what you mean on the lowering. I'd lift that rear about one outer spline. It's a 4 hour task and I can refer you to several web links with detailed instructions. Any competent VW mechanic can do it for about $250 easy. It will give it a bit of that raised in the rear, dropped in the front Cal-Look. Makes the car a lot more functional if you travel with passengers and run it hard on some moutain type road courses.

Is the trailing wheel on the front or rear? Take it in for a 4 wheel alignment. I think that Kirk would be a good resource for advice on that. I would seriously doubt that it is that far out if it is indeed a Vintage Speedster, which I agree and believe it is. Someone some time back even reported seeing that car and the orange one under construction. You can bet that Kirk didn't build it that way, and if they hit something with the front, it's probably just a bent front beam. Cost, maybe $250 for the beam and $200 to install and align the front end. Honestly, the chasis and tranaxles of these cars are not expensive to maintain. The motors would not be if we were not all such a bunch of power maniacs.

Good luck, settle down and you will be able to enjoy one of the most memorable motoring summers of your life. Enjoy, you paid the admission price... $19500 was a good deal on the car and I can't believe that trailing wheel will be bad.
