Hello:

I have been checking out this site for a while and the various postings and links really helped me when I bought my speedster 1 month ago. So Thank you!!

I got a great deal on a 57 Speedster which I was told was factory built by Intermeccanica in the early 80's. It was suspect, and I actually talked to Henry on my way to go see the car. Bottom line the basics like the crest and markings on the hood hinge, or the silver foil tag on the door were not there. I did get a 1979 Intermeccanica manual on ebay and checked out the details and there are a lot of similarities, especially in the square reinforced crossbar under the dash. I dont know if I have one of the first 608 Intermeccanica's or a later version, or another builder. I dont think Intermeccanica was doing turnkey anyway back then. So here is what I know, based on working with my mechanic.

* Its on a 1967 Swing Axle VW Pan.
* Steering Column seems about the same year as well.
* Not sure about the engine size but he believes it is a Type 2.
* 28K Miles. Engine may be from the 70's
* Gel Coat rather than painted
* Told that the kit was around 1980, and then built in 1982
* Their were 3 owners and I was not able to track back to the original
* I just put in the Nardi wheel and the horn button on the dash.
* Drives great and feels very solid. I just saw a 2004 Beck yesterday and it almost felt flimzier than this (not sure though)
* New tires, with Porsche Nipple Caps

I have a bunch of photos in my folder "miacarino". I will post 3 here, and perhaps a few more on another posting.

If the speedster Archeologists out there can help me, I really want to try and understand the histroy of this car, and who may have built it, or at least generated the kit. I took photos of what I felt was important, if you need anymore let me know.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP

Mike....a new proud owner.

Hinges in the doors aren't like my old CMC ones, either.
Good news; from here, it looks better than mine ever used to. You're ahead there. Also good news; if it's not a CMC, it might well have been built by someone who's still in business.
That is a CMC-issue hood emblem, though. Looks dead-on like the one I used to have. I think the combination of hinges and swing axle setup allow you to rule CMC out completely. Every Classic Motor Carriages, FiberFab or Street Beasts I've ever seen was an IRS car.
Folks...thanks for the help so far. Still trying to figure this out.

What exactly is an IRS car? It sounds like 50/50 CMC. I'm not sure if the hood ornament is original or not.

I gather we can rule out an Intermeccanica though?

Did CMC use Gel-coat paint back in the early 80's?

When I talked with Henry at IM he said the hinge should be marked with an IM imprint. I can not find.

I dont know if the early IMs were sold completely as kits, or if people used other parts. The 79 IM Cataloigue which came with the car seems identical.

Any other options for getting to the bottom of this. Would IM know the VIN of the original cars, or did they not put them on.

The only thing that keeps me going is that the owner said it was an IM, but when I asked why, his reasoning was that the previous owner said it was IM.

I would like to think it is one of the first 608. Perhaps I will email the photos to IM, and see what they think.

Thanks again.
