My worst fear is that some mouth breather has cut off the column housing to help mate it to the Dino wheel and adapter that was on it . However, looking at other 1970 style columns, i see that the turn indicator mechanism's are quite close to the rim of the column "bell". There is a good video on Youtube on replacing the upper bearing on a 1970 Ghia, and it looks pretty damn close to what I have.. Now... I bought the ONLY adapter that fit my column's criteria in spline count, etc. So I feel pretty confident that I bought the right hub. The hub slid on the splines easily, and easily bottomed out , therfore not allowing the hub to go closer to the dash. Any ideas as to what I am dealing with here? I know many guys have put Banjo's and CIP1/Flat four adapters on bugs and Speedsters.

If you have a blinker housing from a 1970 with the blinker arm in place and wiper function on the dash, there's an allen head bolt that secures the housing to the column and a smidge of fore and aft adjustment. If it's from a 1970, you also have a steering wheel lock as part of the key mechanism which must fit into a slot in the housing and a slotted collar on the shaft, this is going to limit that fore and aft adjustment however.

See if you can get things where they ought to be by loosening the bolt and moving the housing. If you still have a problem, email me or post here and I'll figure it out for you. I put a VW steering column and housing in my Fiat 600 and my MGA both, and have gotten pretty familiar with 'em . . . unfortunately.

Oh, you can dress those housings and blinker arms up quite a bit with a drill, wire wheel, and a little paint. Check pics/links below, it's a stock 1970 Ghia/Super Beetle blinker assembly:

Yeah, it's strange, Im not quite sure whats going on there. There is 1" of splines, and if I take 3/8" off that part that you can see that it is bottomed out, that'll let that hub slide on further. Ive driven race cars with less spline area grabbing the shaft than this. So that part doesnt worry me at all. I'll probably have it machined if I cant slide that column up. The Samba suggested that there's two allen bolts that holds the column in place and they think I can slide the column that gap, I'm not sure thats 100% though... I'll know in a day or two...
And MAN does their breath ever stink because of it !!!

My mother had a deviated septum (from birth) and for some reason the doctor removed her uvula (thinking that it would help) when they pulled her tonsils as a young child . . . you could weld cast iron with her breath !!
