I just got a new VS and I guess its sort of a kit as the oil cooler and the back up lights arent wired. I crawled under the trans and looked on the right side for the reverse switch and cant see any thing. Could the tranny builder have put a plug in the switch hole? Do any of you guys know where I can get a switched ignition hot for the back up light and the cooler fan? I was also looking at the oil cooler and it is mounted flat against the rear bulkhead and only about 1/4 inch from the body. Is there a hole where it can breathe through or are they counting on that 1/4 inch of space to let air through the cooler? I seriously doubt the thing will work worth a damn. So far every one here has been of great help. Thanks, Frank.

What year is your transmission?. The switch on the right side of the nose cone wasn't standard until about 1969 (although worldwide it was infrequent on some models). There is a hot terminal on the coil (VW solution) or use the running lights (license plate light) for power.
Some bugs had a switch on the back of the speedo. Photo of BACK-UP switch which is used on VW's that did not come with the switch in the gear box .It was supplied by HELLA called Tachowellenschalter (GERMAN) 271941521a. It was an Original VW accessory for fitment of reverse lights on early bug and bus.
I've seen a 5-6" round hole in bulk head of many VS Speedsters. If its covering that it is preheating air going to engine which is hot a good idea. Like a radiator air should flow thru the cooler. You often see them mounted above the transaxel or in one of the wheel wells with a gravel guard screen. Does it have an oil filter, thermostat and electric fan? All are good additions and could be easily added if you move the cooler.
"Sort of a kit" so true---why do you think they call it "the madness"?
Yeah, but if it's a NEW car, you'd kinda expect things like this to (a.) work and (b.) work right. Neither of those look to be in that category coming out of the shop....
Kinda falls into that, "What the heck were they thinking?" area.
I believe Frank here lives in that too-far-away-radius-to-return-to-VS-headquarters-for-fixes to his brand new Speedster. Best you see how Todd Rimer slowly handled his issues last year. I think it's covered under your warranty.
Unless it just slipped through the cracks at Vintage (which is possible, but I really doubt), I'll bet your cooler is actually wired and has a thermostat. The weather is much cooler right now and your oil probably just hasn't gotten hot enough to trigger the thermostat.
Mine rarely comes on during fall and winter months.
Yours is located in the normal position for Vintage cars and will get plenty of air for cooling.
Be more than happy to chat Frank...PM me if you wish!
No wonder there are so many low mileage Vintage replicas for sale. Selling 'not for prime time' cars to unsuspecting buyers will do that.
Has Vintage always sold substandard cars, or is this something new?

Pipe down, O'Black.
You know you're not allowed to say anything about the car anybody else makes, unless you own one. John Eastman says so. Even if you DO own one, you'll still have to run your opinion through John first, for approval. Provocateurs will be shot at dawn.
Why wait for dawn?
I'm not saying in this particular instance, but quite often there are a good number of Speedster buyers who, have limited mechanical skills hence for lack of same, a small issue becomes a larger one... Speedsters are a rolling mechanical hobby that are never quite done so to speak ...i.e. all owners need to have a decent wrenching ability or they'll quickly become frustrated and out pops that For Sale Sign.
As Stan and Rich can confirm, I have to admit to having limited wrenching skills, so many things on my VS I don't fool with. The ones I can handle I do, the ones I can't I write a check for to Kauth & Mayeur here in Peoria.
I knew that would be the case going in, and I continue to accept that reality as part of what I bargained for in the beginning.
What I didn't bargain for is all that I have learned and gained from people on this site. Thanks!
Frank.
Just to clarify this posting. In your other posting, you mention that you didn't order your Vintage with an engine, but you did order it with an oil cooler. Correct? If so, this posting makes it sound like Vintage forgot to wire your oil cooler, which is not really the case. Correct? You're just looking for some help getting it wired to the engine you are installing. Correct?
I just hate to see Vintage get an undeserved black eye for a misunderstanding.
Theron, can we have a digital Kotex dispenser installed on each thread so we can click/vote one to the member whose pu$$y hurts The most?
sorry Jack, but some of these posts.....
and I apologize to any ladies still following the site.
I never intended this to be bashing Vintage. So calm down you guys. I just wanted some help with the wiring as I have no wiring diagram. Also, looking at the transaxle it is coded
AM 289 7273 and there is no boss in the cone for one so it looks like the back up light is a no go unless I change the cone. If any one has another idea let me know. Wolfgang showed a switch for the speedo cable so maybe that might another way out. Finding that switch might be fun.
As far as doing my own work, I owned a restoration shop for 11 years and I did every phase of thework except for paint and upholstery so I'm not afraid to try anything. We specialized in GM cars so all of the Porsche and VW knowledge is all new but I'm having fun learning. I have been a member of this site since 2006 but just recently became a supporting member. Thanks, Frank.
I still laughed at Speedbucket's comment though...
Did you have that transaxle built up or is it bone stock? Guess its an imported transaxle as I don't believe there were 1300 cc in US in '71. Probably why no reverse switch. Not a freeway flyer for sure.
AM 1300 R&P 4.375 Sedan and Vert from 8/70
(other gears are pretty std 3.78/2.06/1.26/.93)
Strong single side diff cover
I hope its a freeway flyer. Its supposed to be a Rancho or Trans West prostreet with 3.88 gears.
I can't tell by looking where it was rebuilt. I don't know how hard it will be to drop the nose of the trans axle out to change the cone but its gotta be easier with the motor out.

Hey, Vinny,
I'm an IM owner, and I didn't make a comment, so it's not typical, really...
You have to remember that Ron is a left coaster...come to think of it, so are you.
That must say something.
