Adam:

The T-1 engine will bolt right up to the 912 transmission, but the flywheel and clutch are different.

Whereas the T-1 has one humongus "gland nut" in the middle holding the flywheel to the crank (and torqued to 300 ft. lbs), the T-4 has 6 bolts (I think) holding the flywheel on, much like a Chevy crank set-up. You'll have to use a T-1 flywheel/pressure plate on the T-1 engine. Otherwise, it should work (use the existing T-4 throw out bearing, but install a new one with the new pressure plate.)

Gordon,
The 912 engine is different than the type 4. The only 912 to have a type4 was th 76 model which was a one year only model. Porsche stopped importing the 912 to the US in 69 then did the 76 model in response to the gas crunch.

The 912 motor is like the 356 engine. I have my engine out of my car right now (1969 912 engine) but I have not had the clutch anf PP off to see how the flywhhel is bolted on.

Adam,
You should have a 5 speed if your engine is not a 76 model.

Recardo,
Engines yes, transaxles no. The mounting is completely different on the Porsche transaxle vs T1. Not only that but the shift link is different as well. Not to say that it can't be done (I have a Porshe 5-speed in my pan based speedster) but it requires a bit of engineering to do so.
