Jerry:
It may be my personal preference, but I never use a socket when adjusting valves. I use a 6-point box-wrench on the lock nut, and can then fit the screw-driver bit onto the adjuster (with the box-wrench slid down the shank of the screw-driver), adjust to the feeler gauge tab (slight drag when pulling through) and then hold the screw-driver in place whilst moving the box-wrench up the screwdriver shank and tightening the lock nut with the box wrench. That way the adjuster doesn't get tighter when I crank the lock nut, because I'm holding it in place with the screw-driver as the lock nut is tightened (noticing the position of the screwdriver (10 o'clock, say)and holding it in that position is pretty easy).
Same is true for zero-clearance settings: screw the adjuster in until you feel a very slight drag when spinning the push rod between your fingers, then hold the adjuster in place with the screwdriver whilst cranking the lock-nut home. Bingo-Bongo, adjusted perfectly!
