is it me or what. i am trying to adjust to nil lash with steel push rods. but i can't seem to get a good fit on the lock nuts on the adjuster screw. 12mm socket just rounded a nut 11mm to small. 1/2" to big 7/16 socket won't fit, 12mm is a 12point socket. maybe buy a six flat socket?
Jerry:

It may be my personal preference, but I never use a socket when adjusting valves. I use a 6-point box-wrench on the lock nut, and can then fit the screw-driver bit onto the adjuster (with the box-wrench slid down the shank of the screw-driver), adjust to the feeler gauge tab (slight drag when pulling through) and then hold the screw-driver in place whilst moving the box-wrench up the screwdriver shank and tightening the lock nut with the box wrench. That way the adjuster doesn't get tighter when I crank the lock nut, because I'm holding it in place with the screw-driver as the lock nut is tightened (noticing the position of the screwdriver (10 o'clock, say)and holding it in that position is pretty easy).

Same is true for zero-clearance settings: screw the adjuster in until you feel a very slight drag when spinning the push rod between your fingers, then hold the adjuster in place with the screwdriver whilst cranking the lock-nut home. Bingo-Bongo, adjusted perfectly!

i was using the socket to break lose the jam nut. i used a 6 point box wrench and used the allen key. (scat rockers use allen adjusters). and that worked fine. but just after adjusting the valves i was rejeting and droped the dog bone spacer that sits on top of the float pivot shaft. so dead in the water till i find it or go buy a new one.
Jerry,

Snap-on offers a Tool for Adjusting VW Valves. Its an "Right Angle-Offset" Box End Wrench with High Impact Handle. As for Allen Head Adjusters, you may consider an Allen with Head T-Handle so you can let the "Box End Wrench" slide down the Allen Wrench T-Handle when rotating the Push-Rod.

Good Luck,

Jack Blake
