Hello,

A number of years ago my father purchased a new speedster replica. I think it has a VW motor and chassis. Anyway, his health was poor and the car was never driven more than a few miles. The car was always kept in storage. He recently passed away and I need to sell the car. I believe he paid over $20,000 for it in 2002 and I would like to get a fair price.

The problem that I have is that I live in NY and would have to ship the car to the east coast to sell it here, or have someone look at it in Tucson (the guy who owns the storage facility has offered to show it).

My question is, how much do you think a car like this is worth and where would I find an interested person?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

The car is really beautiful, a creamy white. I can send photos, but can't get them to attach to this post

Cadence, this is a great venue for you to try to sell your Dad's car. If you can upload photos to the photo section here and if they are detailed enough, we can probably help you identify the builder. The more information you can provide, the better. If you have any paperwork with the car that answers the questions that Ricardo mentioned, that would be a help also.

As for pictures, take photos of all sides, top up, top down, interior, under the front and rear lids and, especially, the engine bay. I too am sorry to hear of your loss, but I'll bet your Dad would have been thrilled that his baby found a new home with an enthusiastic owner.

I'd sure try to get some one locally there to service it --- sitting 5 years or so with same oil and brake fluid would be risking problems when potential buyer drives it (if a 5 year old battery would even start it). Additionally, the tires may be dry rotted and un-useable. I wouldn't transport it as new buyer may be on West Coast - where it sits now is rather central. The make, details and existing condition will drive the price -- post lots of pictures and check records for build specifics. I hear a lot of folks buy them off ebay without even seeing or driving the vehicle.
15 years ago I lived in Tucson. There is a good aircooled community there, so service is easy. My daughter's best friend still lives there, and she goes to visit about 2x a year. (She's the godmother of their 18 mo old.) Anyway, daughter Suzannah is very familiar with Speedster replicas and has driven mine a lot. Like daily for months on end. She could drop by and give us an onsite assessment if it's still there at the end of May. Also could present with your car and you on cell phone to a local dub mechanic. Not that Suzannah knows anything about mechanics. I would also think you could fly out there and coordinate it yourself. Write PM and we can talk on the phone.

Thanks everybody for all the help/suggestions. I am going to look for the papers for the original car sale so that I can post more information..and get the photos up. You are all so nice! Yes, I wish I could keep the speedster, but I live in NYC and the thought of driving such a pretty car on the city streets makes my hair curl. --cadence

Cadence - Sorry for your loss! I would tell you to keep the car and enjoy driving it in and out of the NYC, but I know the cost of an indoor Garage could run $200-3+ per month. Maybe a friend out in the burbs could help you out with storage. You won't have any problem selling the car once it starts warming up that's for sure!

Best of luck - Mel
Thanks again for all the helpful information. Some of you expressed interest in the speedster. I am getting ready to sell this beautiful little car. The milage is at 181--really barely driven. Please see previous posts for more information and a link to pictures.

My husband and I will be in Tucson from July 25-30th and can show the car to anyone interested. At this time we will also have the car looked at by a mechanic.

Please email me back or post to list if you have any questions.

Thanks so much!
