Just adding a little variety. These are what's in at the old laboratory right now. I get to use the garage and all the goodies in exchange for helping out with sheet metal bending, beading and cutting jobs and a little disassembly work on VW-related stuff.
In this week is this Firebird (friend of Orange Camaro Man) and this eighth-mile Bug owned by Nelson Rodriguez. Nelson's car is here on an annual visit, and I've got a few lessons-learned from having been under it for the last couple days:
One, check your shift coupler every once in a while. The three shafts in this car hadn't been checked since it was dropped off last fall for a freshening up, and they wouldn't have made one hard pass down the track without coming loose.
Second, it probably wouldn't hurt any of us to walk around our cars and turn a wrench on stuff we can see. Obvious stuff should be common sense; if it's loose, tighten it to at least snug -- more if it's indelicate.
Third, this car had grime all up underneath it from this year's racing. It probably wouldn't hurt us to be nice to the guys and gals who maintain our cars to occasionally take a rag to the oil and grit. :)
I'm up under my car about once a week with old tee-shirts and stuff. Takes about 10 minutes, if I stay on top of it. A clean chassis is a happy chassis, right?
Anyhow, they're both pretty cool for their own reasons.
