Just a note to say Hi.

I am new to the site and considering a 356 replica. I had a couple of Porsches 'back in the day' a 1973 911S Targa which I bought new (I worked at a Porsche dealership for several years) and a 356 Super 90. I mostly have shed the 'toys' lately but would still like to have something the wife will ride in (nope, she won't get on the Harley) on the weekends and I like to go occasionally to the local car meets, but I cannot spend the big bucks with my son in law school and two daughters in college, and of course I was not smart enough to hold on to the 'bathtub'.

Anyway, hi from Orlando! You seem to have a nice group of folks here.

"You seem to have a nice group of folks here" BWAH HAH HAH HAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

We've suckered another one!!!!!!

Seriously, welcome to the madness. If you're still looking at cars, consider some of the group gatherings so that you can take a look at various different cars side-by-side. The biggest is, of course, Carlisle in May. If you can't wait that long, a number of us are gathering in the Smokies for a run on the Tail of the Dragon in October.
Welcome Marc from another newbie. Your right these are great guys and a real source of knowledge for Speedsters.

Here is my advice as a new speedster owner.

Read up, Research and buy the best used speedie you can afford, one in running condition already registered in your state. You live in the home of CMC and there should be many different used brands around close to you.

Like the others say go to shows to check them out and use Craig's list or Forum Classifieds like SOC, Samba to get a feel for pricing. Don't buy the first one you see and if you buy out of state be aware that shipping is around 2 grand and you might have registration issues with your DMV also.

This group of knuckleheads will teach and set you straight from day one or should I say 356... BAAAAAAWAAAAAAAHAAAAA take that SEG off your mug.. You'll learn.. LOL.. Welcome my NEW east coast freind..

Welcome Marc, I'm sure you know by now that this site very valuable when it comes working the bugs out of your used Speedster. These people, as a group, know everything about these cars. The big things and all the little things, (like why do I get a strong gas smell on left hand turns). For me , it was very important to be sure that the car could be legally registered , insured, inspected etc. In some states you need valid proof of veh. id. Good luck! Al
I seem to have been supporting lawyers for years that are not related to me; might as well keep it in the family.
My kids have partial scholarships and some loans, but I really don't want them to start out too far 'behind the curve'. I am delighted to help 'launch them'.

Don't be surprised if I end up with a car from a forum member very shortly. Then you can 'have your way' with me!
Thanks again for a nice welcome.

Welcome to the group, Marc.
As a true Nuckelhead I thought I weigh in here.
I think it boils down to this- Does your kid want a college education or is it more important to you?
If your kid wants it then he/she will do what is necessary to get it: grants, scholarships, loans. or putting it off a couple years and working to save for that education.
It's admirable to want to pay for your child's college education, but it's not the best thing for your child.
Let them fly. If they need your help let them put together a plan to achieve their goals.
But make damn sure they're not your goals.

Terry,

Well, we all have our points of view on this, I guess. My parents could not afford to pay for my college so I got a job and eventually got lured away from college (believe it or not, I went sports car racing, but that's a story for another day) because I was not focused at that age on my future. My one regret in life is that I did not finish college and pursue the career I was interested in. That said, I am not complaining, life is good and I can help my kids (and buy my toys). I want the kids concentrating on their future goals and to that end, my boy is on a partial scholarship to USC law (he was offered a full ride to Univ. of Fla, but UCS is a better law school) and doing very well there, the next oldest (three girls one boy in college) is on a partial scholarship in Anthropology at the Univ. of Central FL, the youngest daughter is on a partial scholarship at North Carolina School of the Arts (very prestigious school in the performing arts) in a very challenging program. My oldest daughter is married and owns her own business, and yes, she also got some help from dad. I am 100% confident that my kids will all do well in their careers and lives; none has had drug issues (unlike many of their peers) no out of wedlock babies, no arrests, no drunken driving, no attempted suicides etc. etc.
All in all, the kids are doing well and although on different paths (two liberals, two conservatives), who could ask for more; my legacy is my children, their success is mine (and the wife's too) as well.

Speedster deal about done, news soon.
:)
