A while a go someone asked if there was any way to improve the headlight output on these cars. I just cam across a site for Sylvania Xenarc HID lights. The address below is for the low beam 7" round kit. At $350, it's a lot of money, but could end up being a good investment if you do a lot of night driving, or your night vision sucks (like mine does....the joys of getting older).

Ron: Seems like a lot of us have the same tired eyes......

I went the Halogen H-4 route with a pair of replacements from Tweeks (P/N 408-221 at $60), but I substituted the brighter bulbs (P/N 408-038) to get 80/100 watts for lo/hi beam. I'm running heavier wiring - I think it's 12 gauge instead of VW's 16 gauge - it's about twice the size of VW wiring and I have a Hella headlight relay to control it all.

High beam is almost as bright as having an additional set of driving lights, and low beam is brilliant white with a horizontal cut-off line which sweeps up on the right (for street signs).

I like 'em and they're not that costly.........gn
