I know there have been quite a few different sound system recipes that have been shared on the forum.   I came up with something for my new Speedster if any one is interested.

This solution doesn't have any head unit so you will control everything from your phone with music apps like Pandora, Spotify, apple music or various apps that can stream radio.  Doesn't help if you want to play CDs, tapes,... or 8 tracks (sorry).   It also means you control volume from the phone.   I'm looking for a solution to this as there has to be some sort of Bluetooth volume knob that can be enabled and mounted hidden under the dash.

The approach was to install a Bluetooth enabled car amplifier under the dash that isn't too big/heavy but has ample power to run decent speakers and a good Bluetooth connection.   I landed on an $83 blaupunkt bluetooth amp on Amazon that has 4 channels and can be bridged 2 if you want.  Really good power for any size speaker you would use in our cars and you could even power a small sub if you want.  Model AMP1804BT.

I used industrial strength velcro strips that I bought at Walmart and put the soft strip across the entire back of the amp and the same size hook side on the fiberglass wall right of center under the dash -- vertical wall that is up against your frunk.  So far mine is holding strong and you can see how I later mounted my speakers so just in case it comes loose it won't go flying at anyone in the passenger seat.    Simple wiring setup run from the fuse box with a 30a fuse on the power (tap into the full time power lead from the battery), one for the ignition on power lead, and a ground.  NOTE: turn both of the gain settings down to the 1/4 mark before hooking speakers up.  Mine were all the way up by default which could blow speakers if you start it up with your phone volume up.

For speakers I didn't want to cut any holes and wanted something that was mostly out of sight.   I have seen a couple of solutions where plastic speaker pods were used under the dash with 6.5 or 5.25 car speakers but I wanted it to be a little less noticeable.  For my back yard I found outdoor speakers from Proficient Audio years ago and have been really impressed with their sound and build quality.  I was able to find a new open box pair of their 4" woofer model on ebay for $62 shipped which is a great deal...  typically around $150.

I drilled through the steel bar that runs under the dash and mounted them using the brackets that came with them.  As you can see they are a little more to center than I would like.  Ideally they would be more to the sides but the hood arm fiberglass bump outs were in the way.  Still sounds great but soundstage would be better if the left one could sit left of the steering column and right one symmetrically placed on the other side - didn't work with my build but something to consider.  Since they are slightly up under the dash you just adjust them to angle down a little so the speaker is projecting below the dash.

Here are pictures of the finished install.   You can see them but barely noticeable with the black covers and no brand emblem to catch your eye.  What is nice is that the sound comes through really good realitively speaking.   Decent bass out of the 4 inch woofers but as with any setup the bass gets lost first at higher speeds.

For about $145 I'm very pleased with the sound and look.  If I want some heavier bass eventually, I may look into building a custom cabinet for a 6.5 inch subwoofer and mounting it in the open cavity under the dash on the passenger side, but stand alone these are heavy 4 inch woofers and hold their own.   The 2nd two channels in the amp can be bridged to have plenty of power to run a small sub and it has built in high pass and low pass crossovers that allow you to send bass signals to the sub and highs/mids to the speakers.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Paul

I did basically the same thing in my Spyder.

I got a TINY amp: Audiopipe 2 x 100WRMS amp for $60, unfortunately no longer available. For bluetooth, I got an Audio receiver from Amazon(25-30 bucks). It has volume, pause, next and prev. track buttons on it, and I mounted it near my shifter. I can't find that one either.

For speakers I put in Polk Audio 6.5" patio speakers, under the dash and brackets bolted to the frame hoop that runs from the floor under the dash and back to the floor. The speakers are black and have a tiny logo, but are set back far enough that you can't really see them. But, they shoot straight at your ears so soundstage is good. These were at least $200 a pair, maybe $250. I've been using Polk speakers since the 80s in home and car. You definitely lose bass as speed goes up, but you can listen to music as you cruise. They are best under 45 mph.

It was a challenge to fit, especially in a smaller Spyder, but it sounds great. I especially like the pause and volume control without fumbling in pockets for a phone. You can answer a call, but they won't be able to hear you, microphone is too far away and there's just too much wind and engine noise.

I ordered one of these bluetooth media control buttons from Walmart.com for $13 and will give it a shot.  Its only 1 1/4" diameter and I think I can mount it somewhere inconspicuous or dash mount with a rare earth magnet on the back side and metal plate on the button so I don't have to stick anything to the dash.

I'll post pictures and comments on how it works after I get it installed next week.   It would be nice to have a knob for volume and not just buttons, but this is still better than having to use the phone and gives the full set of controls I need.  Universal Steering Wheel Bluetooth Media Control Button Can Remotely Control Each Car’s Remote Control Mobile Phone Kit Mobile Bluetooth Remote Control Mobile Multimedia Button

Update on the media button that I ordered for $12 from Walmart.com at the link earlier in this topic.   This tiny little thing looks and functions great with my Samsung  S20 phone.   It is barely more than an inch in diameter and not noticeable (appears bigger in the pictures than in person). I tried doing a magnet mount with rare earth magnets but that was a bad idea.   No way to keep it from moving around when you push the buttons, so I just used the included 2 sided tape and will be careful if I ever have to remove it using a blow dryer.

Here are pictures of the mounting location left of the steering column.   Really completes the overall setup and usability of the system so I no longer need to use my phone for the basic functions.

@Troy Sloan hey bro!...waz up?... those  speakers sound like just what the doctor ordered...i could use a bit more volume than stock speakers in the usual spot in the foot wellsIMG_20210804_151545_444 over the SUBARU exhaust note, but really don't want to make giant 6x9 holes in the back seat leather under back window or in door panels..any photos or diagram of how those get mounted under dash?...feel free to PM  thanks

Boy, ain’t THAT the truth!

I have a Bluetooth connection from Anker - similar to Danny’s, maybe 2” across and stuck on the side of the radio.  I usually have my ear plugs in when I drive and then turn the stereo volume up to around ‘45’ so when the “phone” rings it really wakes me up.  I can hear them, they can’t hear me other than a “muffa-muffa-goobalism-camah-floogie” or something.

Still, for $20 bucks delivered, it’s fine for what I wanted.

My setup actually didn't account for any support for phone calls... I had just chalked that one up to never being realistic so stuck with audio only.

That does make me think of something else I do need to figure out... What cell phone mount solutions have you used?   The ideal spot seems to be on the left side wall section below the dash (left of your legs).  This would allow you to see the phone if needed, but not have it up on the dash and in your face.   I haven't found anything standard that would work there and really don't want to drill holes.

Ideas welcome!

i like the throaty hum of 180 hp subaru power, but just 2 speakers in the kick panels just wasn't cutting it in the  sound level needed at hwy speeds...here is my solution.....under dash not an option due to A/C unit20210908_110419

zero drilling of holes....some new compact surface mount speakers ....some wiring...a bit of labor & some velcro .....and the result even more happy motoring & smiles for miles

@MarylandGuy

Paul, I only just saw this post. Here are a couple of old pics of my cell phone set-up.

Click on pics to enlarge.

I had an old holder with flexible mount. I detached the suction-cup attachment and bolted that end to my radio bracket under the dash.IMG_1461

Here is a pic of the dash layout with mic attached to the padded brow of the dashboard. The phone hung just below the dash but still visible from driver seat. The mic worked OK if I leaned closer. The phone audio played through my speakers.IMG_0401

Now the set-up has been updated to the mic and earbuds of a hands-free phone appliance.

I hope this info is useful to you!
