So was it a loose spark plug? That would certainly explain the hissing sound!

Nope; they were fouled up. The explanation was that if the cylinders are not firing then you get that sucking sound through the carb throats.

So is it running a little too rich? Or do you just need to open it up and clean it out more often?

From what the expert mechanic told me, the mix is perfect but the spark could be a little weak or the spark plug heat range is too low. I bought a Pertronix retrofit kit to put it in in case it starts acting out again.
What'cha running for plugs?

I have Densos in there and a set of spare NGK's (can't find Bosch in that smaller size for 044 heads). My friend and master mechanic Ralph told me to get a set of plugs for a Harley Davidson and that those should work; he says the heat range in those is a little higher.
Yeah, I was really looking for the heat range.I'm running W8's, and I've noticed a bunch of folks running W7's, so either of those should work.
Also, what are you gapping them at?
If you had a strong coil I might recommend going to Platinum plugs, but for a Blue coil (no resistor) or under, they might not improve anything.
Also, check to see if the distributor rotor has a resistor in it - many of them do.

Do you have the smaller, skinny Jap-bike type plugs? I am running NGK DP8 EA9, an 18mm socket fits these. I don't use platinum plugs in any motor that didn't come with them as original equipment. I change the plugs once a year, cheap insurance with 5K or less on the motor each year.

Hi guys; it's February of 2010; hissing is back on the right carb. It was driving fine yesterday; then it sort of had a small backfire that triggered it again. Jjr and I checked it yesterday; dwell angle is perfect. Jjr was suspecting a dirty right carb (since I'm running Gene Berg's breather system which sucks up crankcase vapors back through the right carb). The right carb definitely looks dirtier than the left. The sound is definitely coming from that side. Sounds like a Presto pressure cooker in sync with the motor. My previous experience is that it goes away after giving it a hard freeway drive; let's see what happens this time. A couple of months ago it was the hissing sound combined with a frayed clutch cable; we fixed that last month and now it's this. There's always a surprise lurking with these cars...fun, fun, fun.
