In anticipation of installing a 911 fan shrouded style Type 4 engine into my Beck Speedster, I understand some surgery of the hood will be required. Are there any of you folks out there with this type of set-up that would have photos of how much clearance is needed and how you handled that operation?

Rich, when I installed a Bernie Bergman 911 type shroud in my 1984 Intermeccanica I used the trial and error method. With the engine and shroud in the car I lowered the engine hood, did some trimming and then lowered it again. I did this over and over again until the shroud easily cleared the engine hood. The bad news was that when I was caught in a rain storm all the cutting allowed water to drip into the engine compartment. The water dropped right on the spinning fan and sprayed water all over the engine compartment. My new engine has a standard doghouse shroud (thankfully).
Here's a photo of my old setup. You can see how much I had to cut from the engine hood.
