I received my new horn button from Sierra Madre Collection. I returned the non-working horn button to the eBay seller and got a refund. Mind you I had to pay my own shipping back to him for a defective part so I was none to happy with that.

The SMC horn button is definitely a better built horn button. The outside ring feels like it is stainless steel and not cheap tin like the other one. I tested it and it has continuity and a quick test on the car and it honks so I know it works.

My question is how are others on here securing the horn button?

The horn button drops right in to the hub without touching the sides so it is loose in the hub. I'm looking at options for securing it. Some have suggested silicone but I think I need something that secures it from a couple locations around the horn ring so it is centered in the hub. I'm considering cutting some flaps from a rubber bike tube and taping three of them to the bottom of the horn button and letting an 1/8" or so of material wrap around from the bottom to the side of the horn button so when I press it in it centers itself in the hub. I may need to solder a wire on the tab on the back of the horn so I can connect it to somewhere on the hub positive contact is made with the hot parts.

Any other ideas?

If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Robert,  sorry to ask...

-  are you talking about the 79mm Porsche horn button that fits flat4 banjo wheels and 356a 9 bolt pattern wheels?

- or the smaller one that fits wheels mounted on 6 bolt momo/nardi boss/hubs.

A) if it's the latter, you will need one of these adaptors.   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stee...it-Hub-/281659075440

This link is for reference only... It has good representative pictures... It retails for cheaper in various US sites.

B) if it's the first one.. It should be pressure fit, no rubber ring required.

I hope I'm not adding confusion to your query.

cheers

Cool... I actually have the same adaptor and NLA horn button...

Sierra madre advertises it at 79mm, NLA and stoddard at 82mm... Though they have the same part number.  Sorry for the confusion.

i had a similar problem... But not as drastic as what you describe...  I grabbed a flat head screw driver , sliped It between the edge of the Chrome ring  and the plastic back piece, and carefully pushed out the Chrome ring just a bit at the three nubs to increase the diameter a bit... To close the gap between the horn button and the flashpower adaptor and to ground the horn. Now I have a tight fit...

Alan, and now Luis', method worked. I was hesitant at first to bend anything because the metal rim on the one I got from eBay was thin, cheap, and broke easily. It was like a cheap Chinese repro of a repro.

The horn button from SMC was real stainless steel;  I checked it with a magnet. It was also much thicker. I very slightly bent just one corner from each place where the tabs are positioned. I had to bend them back just a bit but I got the horn button to fit snugly but not so snugly I can't get it out if need be.

Thanks to all who responded.

And FWIW the SMC horn and the eBay horn were the same price. The SMC button was much better quality.

If you need to make contact with the button to the column and if,  the gap is small you may be able to flare the inner edge of the horn button  ..

Correct. This is what I did. That outer edge has to make contact with the steering wheel adapter to complete the circuit. If you don't flare the edges then perhaps some sort of metal shim. It won't take much to hold the horn button in and you wouldn't want much holding it in - you may want to get it out some day!

I looked at the horn button at Sierra Madre, but now I'm confused.  What is the difference between the $179.99 version and the $286.12 unit?  They have different part numbers, 644.347.821.01 vs. 644.347.821.02.  However, in the details, it shows that they are both located at the same WH rack, O-12.  Therefore, if the warehouse guy is not paying close attention, they could give away the expensive one for the lower price!

Or...are they really the same part and SM just makes more off the higher priced part number?!?

I have the opposite problem

the 79mm button from Sierra Madre doesnt fit the Banjo wheel on my VMC Speedster. Maybe they sent me a 82mm?? as you mentioned 2 companies advertising 2 different sizes

i measured my sierra madre horn button and its 82mm. The included horn in the Flat4 banjo wheel is 81mm. Cant fit the sierra madre horn without some modification to the wheel hub, as edsnova suggested
