It's raining pretty good right now in sunny Central California so I don't really feel like tinkering with the speedster even though the garage is dry.
I noticed the other day that my horn wasn't working and I'm assuming it's a fuse. Also it appears the temperature gauge isn't working either because it never moves. The temp. gauge stays at about the 1/4 point on the gauge and never moves so it looks like it's running cool.
Are all the fuses in the fuse pannel the same size? Or are there different amps? I haven't pulled any out yet.
I plan on putting a oil cooler on before summer. I took a look at the search site for oil coolers but am still confused as what to use.
Any recomendations?
Thanks, Eddie

Eddie,
The horn is most likely something really simple like the wire pulling off the horn or dirty contact on the connector. Take a look at the horn behind the drives side horn grill. Check the connector for clean connection. The other easy point is the plug on the back of the horn button. This can be a little more difficult to get to depending on your steering wheel type.

Hope for the loose or bad connection at the horn.
Happy Driving

Eddie, on VW's and your VS as well you've got 8 amp and 16 amp fuses (if I remember correctly), you can tell by the color; some are red and some are white. Your Chinese repro gauge (the same as mine) is probably working though not accurately. I got it to indicate more by putting some resistors in the back; it'll move the range up higher and in my case seems to work acceptably as it gets higher up when the car gets fairly hot. It's funny; everytime I start the car in the morning the needle doesn't want to move so I knock on the glass twice and it comes on. That's what happens with the cheap oriental stuff.

With respect to the oil cooler; I'd say you can probably skip that by just swapping your fan housing for an OEM doghouse unit with the thermostat and flap system. Also, if your car doesn't have it, put on a 356 generator pulley on your generator/alternator; they are smaller than the stock VW and thus turn the fan faster. Of course, stay with the stock size (not the power pulley size) crankshaft pulley.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the input. This site is so great about getting info.Even the info from Vince. If you ask the question wrong, he'll ask it the way it should have been asked and give you the info you want and even more at the same time. Whether you like it or not (he he).
Now I need to go find my credit card so I can get a Happy Face.
Vince I love ya man!
Ok, sounds like I have the exact same issue as Eddie. I grounded out the sensor wire and the needle pegs out so I assumed that the gauge was good and that the sensor was bad. Went and bought a new one and was about to start working on it, when I read this. Now I am concerned that I will just be wasting my time in replacing the sensor. Can anyone tell me a good way to tell if the gauge is good and the sensor is actually the culprit?

And since we are on the topic of gauges
I had your same problem with the gas gauge Jamie. I just ignored it and somehow the thing calibrated itself with use. I just fill out the tank completely and the peg gets way up there close to the 4/4. Some people have tried bending the float's rod a little to tweak it. I suggest you use the Search utility in this site since I recall the issue has been discussed at length with some worthy recommendations that you can use in your case.
Checked all the fuses. They all appear to be o.k. Recardo, they are all the same color...Ivory so how do you tell what amp they are?
I checked the connection on the horn and everything is good, but still no horn.I have a banjo steering wheel . Does anyone know how to pull the horn button off? I guess I'll give Kirk at V.S, a call.
I still dont't know about the temp gauge. I started the car and took it for s short drive. The temp gauge didn't appear to move. Stayed at about the 1/4 point. When I turned the engine off I looked real close at the gauge and it moved very slightly to the left. I guess I'll try changing the sensor. Jamie, let me know if changing your sensor changed the gauge at all. Also Jamie the Chistmas picture of you and your family in your car is great.
I'm only about 10 miles from CB Performance so I think I'll go talk to Pat or Rick I think they have a sensor that is both a temp and oil pressure sensor combined.
Eddie
Eddie, look closely at the plastic casing and it should indicate if it's 8 amp or 16. About the sensors, I know CB Performance carries VDO sensors that work in our applications so you'll be able to get it there. If you took the car for a short drive it won't get sufficiently hot for the temp gauge to move enough. Take it out for at least 20 minutes of highway driving (65 mph) and you'll have a better idea.
