So I planned on taking my Speedster out today for its inaugural drive. Sure, it's not inspected, and there are no seatbelts or backup lights, but it was such a beautiful day, I figured I could work out some bugs. I bolted in the passenger seat, threw on dad's dealer plate, and fired her up.

I drove my "brand new" speedster exactly 2.6 miles, when, going up a hill, the engine died. It wouldn't start again. I put it in neutral, and tried to roll back down the hill, which produced a horrible grinding noise.

One thing led to another, I got it towed back to my garage, pulled the motor, and discovered that the flywheel became disconnected from the crankshaft. Lots of broken metal.

While I'm glad the engine is still in good shape, I'm a little upset because I should have checked this when I had the engine out months ago. The engine was supposedly rebuilt by the car's first owner, and he never drove the car.

This post really has no relevance to anything, I just wanted to complain. Anyhow, I think I found the parts (used) from a guy on eBay, which means I could still have this thing done by graduation, and more importantly, Carlisle (the week after).

That stinks Adam! Hope you get everything straightened around and are able to get to Carlisle. Remember it is always better to break down close to the house and find out what is wrong with your car than when you are a long way from home.

These cars are light, but you will get really tired pushing it...

Often when this happens the dowel pins shear off and a bit gets stuck in the crank. The only way to get it out is to bun it out with an EDM. If the holes are distorted you may be able to drill them oversized. The threads in the crank are a concern since cleaning them up involves cutting some new threads and the cut ones are never as strong as the original rolled threads.

When this happened to me it turned out to be cheaper to buy a new crank and have it balanced rather than get the pins burned out, shipping it to Demello, having the end cleaned up and inspected for cracks. When mine let go at 7500 rpm it cracked the pulley and clutch disc which had to be replace along with the flywheel.
Good Luck
