That's a neat little item, usually they were placed in the rear and took cabin temp air, rather than cold outside or engine fume contaminated air and piped it into the engine
compartment via that aluminum hose in the picture. The hoses fitted around the engine and were spliced into the hoses that fed the heater boxes. A nice angled PVC "Y" fitting worked best.
This way there was a constant controlled flow of pre-heated air passing through the heater boxes without relying on engine cooling fan speed to control the air flow. That air, was just a plus.
The extra air, pre-heated by being taken from the cabin, didn't interfere with the engine cooling at all, it simply passed MORE air through the heater boxes ! ! !
REALLY COOL . . . ah . . . ummm. . . . NEAT ! ! NOT cool. And HUGELY better that the silly version that blew cabin temp air into the fan shroud/generator fan opening.
Those just helped the engine to over heat sooner.
