As a meat cutter and sausage maker, the title had me all excited .......!
That's a real 550a. I've seen this photo before, have it downloaded on my laptop.
Danny, I was thinking about the oil separator. Your inspiration?
But of course. I've said before the real 547 motor was my inspiration. It's all about the internal volume. I just didn't have a "holy bracket-Al approved". Instead, I mounted my coilpack under the separator.
This way stock length spark plug wires can be used. I actually used a 1990 Ford Escort wire set. I had to swap the coil side ends for VW compatibles. The other end are conventional, with air seals stolen from a Bosch wire set. Of course, the screw-on metal ends were needed, the skinny threaded ends only work with the Bosch bakelite ends.
In other words, full custom. Every little part sometimes ends up like this. One little change or need cascades into several changes, just to make it all work.
P.S.: I'd LOVE to have that 5 speed gearbox WITH swing axles.
Me too. I suspect they're hard to source.
I think the difficulty is more in the $$$$ realm rather than availability. Who would spend as much as they cost on a fiberglass clown car? Certainly not us.
