...Or at least I think I am. No, not just because I'm lucky enough to have Speedster, and the crazies that come along with it as friends. I'm talking carburetors.

Danny P. did an wonderful tuning job on my carbs last year at Carlisle when I was fighting the sticky throttle issue. I did my best not to mess with that while I continued to try to eradicate the problem, but finally I had to do some serious teardown, requiring a re-tune. The car runs well now, but I occasionally get a gas smell that is stronger than it used to be. No sign of leaks anywhere, although I am planning to switch to hard lines at some point, at least from the fuel pump to the engine. I also have a very occasional burp in the engine, and my mileage, which was ~30 on the way home from Carlisle, is now in the low 20s. Sometimes when I am in traffic and stopped for a bit the idle will start to drop after a while, making me wonder if the spark plugs are loading up.

Thoughts? None of this seems major, but I'd love to get the mileage back up, and the gas smell concerns me a little.

Did you change the adjustment of the accel pump pushrods? Also, by cleaning everything real well, you are probably running a little rich on the idle mixture settings. Did you replace the accel pump diaphragms? New ones may have different volume so that needs to get adjusted.

If your mileage went down that much, idle mixture must be rich unless your driving habits changed drastically......
