Boy, time flies when you are having fun.  I guess I am having too much fun.

When last visited, I was certain my awful running woes were due to a leaky intake manifold gasket.  The spray-some-Heet-at-it method was used to confirm.

Attached is what I saw when I lifted the driver's side carb/manifold.  About half the gasket missing.  Not good.  Replaced the gasket w/ a new fiber one, and put all back together.  As you might suspect, the car ran much better, but not perfectly.  I had returned to a prior state wherein the engine was drivable, but still rough on throttle transitions, and steady running.  Seemed to be missing or stumbling, and still w/ some popping out the exhaust.  Put your foot into it tho, and it took off w/ plenty of zip.  Also, when adjusting the carbs, I noted that only one of three idle mixture screws had any effect on the idle speed.  Even screwed all the way in, no effect.  WTF??

So I drove it around some, burned about a 1/2 tank, back roads and highway.  Filled it up w/ fresh gas (Sunoco uber premium), and drove a bit more.  Last trip out to run some errands, I can report that the car ran -- I really do not want to say this too loudly -- near perfectly.  Smooth on the throttle, no popping out the back, and good power.  It fixed itself??  I have not gone back to see if the idle screws are now working, but that is on the list.

PS: the business about something hard having gotten in to one of the cylinders does not seem to have been a big deal. Per prior posts, all four compression numbers good.  The banged up spark plug (and all of the others too) were replaced when carbs were off.

I'll need another few hundred miles to be sure that I have overcome (defeated) this problem, and I am cautiously optimistic.  Also, I have a deeper appreciation for what advantages one achieves by employing fuel injection.  Just sayin' . . .

You must have had a giant air leak with so much gasket missing.

Kelly, whai interests me is how on earth could so much of that gasket be missing??  Where did it go??

Great news ---I know you are happier with how it is running---I know this has been bugging you for quite some time--nothing better that a great running Speedster!

Wolfy:  That was definitely a laugh out loud.  Great pic.  I have no idea if this is a N. Korea missile, but I can tell you that we have done such test firings before too.  Also, there is a missile program with a very energetic propulsion system that must be tested and the range in New Mex. is not big enough to handle the maximum range of this system.  So, they waste a lot of the initial propulsion energy by flying a corkscrew trajectory, not unlike this one, on purpose.  In a  controlled fashion.  It is very impressive, actually.

As to my other supporters and well wishers: thanks for the kind regards.  Having the motor running right is a pure pleasure.  Was out again tonight, and all is still good.  Lucky to be back in one piece, you might say . . .

In the grand scheme of things, I would much prefer a chunk of manifold gasket getting caught between Piston and Head than something a.) thicker and b.) harder.

The charms of your life have not yet run out, it seems........

Now.......Drive it for the rest of the season and don't mess with it!

2015 has GOTTA be better for me than 2014.  Had so much else going on (and now, finishing my garage) that I'm just starting my third tank of gas...

I suppose that the good news (finally, after a couple of false starts) is that Pearl is now running great and the new transaxle gearing has her humming along at 3,250 rpm at 72 mph.  Gotta love it.

Get the garage finished later this week and then it's on to getting her new color-matched seats modified and installed before Thanksgiving!

What are you running for 4th gear (.89?) r&p (3.88?) rear tire size?
