Knott's show in April was awesome, it allowed me an opportunity to talk to all makers (Vintage, JPS, Beck and Intermecanica) and some proudly owners. I picked JPS to build my toy (it was tough decision, they're all similiar and helpful, but John Steele was the difference).
- Custom Speedster package
- 2.0 liter type IV engine
- close ratio tranny 3:44

...just like most of newbies and potential new 356 registers on this wonderful forum, I have a dilemma - not sure what is the right color for my baby!!! (John told me, I have plenty of times to decide but three weeks had already been gone by and I'm still not ready), your opinion is highly appreciated.

thanks,

Scott,

I have a JPS myself and I think you'll have an exciting time with your build. Color rather depends on if you want to keep the colors period authentic or something more modern. I am the period authentic type guy but modern colors are striking with the car also. John has lots of the authentic color chips and review the photos on the various pages on this site. I know I liked the Meiseen blue but the wife said the signal red/guards red. Guess who won. I still like the Meiseen Blue.
Scott,
Color choice is a personal preference unless you're thinking about resale. If that's the case, go with traditional colors. Black would be first with red a close second.
However, if you're not worried about resale then go with a color that suits you and damn the purists. The body of a speedster allows an unlimited selection of the 'right' color. Use your imagination and have fun!
Now, as far as interior color is concerned......well, that's another ball of wax altogether.
Terry
By the way, how's Fonzie?

Congrat's That is a tough choose. Their all good makers But I think you'll be pleased. John builds a neat car .

I too am old school, I would go to the 356 Registry and check out the real colors on real 356s first.

Then look at all the cars here and see what catches my eye.

The cheapest to maintain colors are pastels like ivory, beige, pail yellow and off white. Lighter colors are easyer to match.

Red and Black are a pain and will keep you forever on your toes with the detailing, and they are the most expencive paints.

Metalics are neat but tend to fade more. and can be challange to match.

I hope this helps and does not cofuse you more. OUI
Safe colours (you know they will look good and give you good resale value) are: black, silver, white and red. Dark blue or burgandy would also be nice, with a dark tan interior. Silver and white are proabably the best for hiding scratches and rock chips. The silver also looks nice with the dark tan interior.

Ah.... color.... a tough decision for anyone. My suggestion, go with the color you personally like the best and worry about resale later. My first Speedster was red and I can't stand red. I was so happy to find a Speedster for sale in my price range that I over looked color. Hindsight, having a red color car mattered. I checked into getting the car painted a few times and ended up selling the car after owning it for two years.

I now a triple black Speedster. I am much happy with the color. In the end, I'd opt for an Aquamarine blue/green with tan interior if I was building a new car. Silver with red interior is also very classy.

Good luck.

What color's your current car and why?
How do you feel about it, why'd you pick it?

Some colors, while authentic, are boring. Some combos get done to death by lesser car manufacturers(non-Porsch-eee)Some combos look very European, like the silver and fawn , ivory & tan or the deep (non-metalic)grey with chestnut or oxblood/maroon...Sometimes the Krauts hit it right on the money and other times, well I'd just as soon forget the ca-ca browns from the sixties and seventies and the Ralston Purina checkerboard/pshycodelic interior renditions in the eighties...gad-freed!

There is no right or wrong, jus what makes you happy. You sure don't have to justify it to anyone...but I'd stay away from American Motors 'Gremlin Green'
