I have someone who wants me to build their speedster, and he has access to a vw transporter with an auto tranny. He wants to know if that drive train can be used. He is not looking for performance, but just an easy daily driver that he can drive in traffic with an auto tranny. If it can be put onto a bug chassis, what would need to be done on it? OK, you can stop laughing now.

Actually, I saw a 4 seat rail (dune buggy) with an automatic from a type 3 on ebay. I thought to myself, "Who would want that? it will bring $2000, about a third of one in the same shape with a stick!" It brought like $8500! There is always someone out there that wants one that can't use a shifter.

I say go for it.
