i need a 3rd brakelight

did a search but not much help
i really need a suppliers name and part#
thanx in advance.

I don't have a part number, but several of us have gotten them from JC Whitney. These are usually mounted at the top of the engine grill so that they are invisible until lit up.

Actually, I don't see my "3rd light" (inside the grill) over at JC whitney's site. I did get it there though.

i found it on jcwhitney under brake lites, its identical to the old one, 12 LED bulbs, 5 inches long,3/4" deep and 1" tall and fits under the grill with stickum tape they give you.
the undersides of 6 of the grills have to be cut ever so slighty(im guessing aviation snips) to fit over lite.

I have the 5" light, but I believe that they also have an 8" light if you really want to be seen. I've also added a license plate bracket with a strip of red LEDs. Belt and suspenders!

Mike Mcklevey has a nice LED setup hidden in the grill. He may chime in here. I orded the same light he used today.

I put a JC Whitney light strip on my plate frame.

003-74R Radius LED 3rd Brake Light 9.95" wide x .75" high x 1.6" deep

I mounted it up high under the back edge of the grille opening. I used the posts on the back of the light to mount it.

I used a piece of rubber stair nosing to close the gap between the bottom of the light and the deck lid below. I stuck it to the bottom of the light with double stick foam tape.

I ran the wires, with a disconnect plug, through the bulkhead at the forward edge of the deck lid and tapped into the brake wire going toward the back of the car. You also need a ground connection.

I recently added this flasher:

to make the 3rd brake light flash when I first step on the brake.

This splices into the new wire I added going to the 3rd brake light. It also needs a ground.

Yes,,,, looks like it to me (wrong place though IMHO). My 3rd lite is at the top inside of grill.

Since the VS has little space between the underside of the deck lid (CMC has 3/4" plus) I would use a 3-4 miniture high output red LED's, they are about 1/8" in diameter, surprisingly super right and could be installed in the small space below the engine grill or in the vertical face on the grill. I have seen them on eBay. ~Alan

2002 and newer VS deck lids changed in that area.

Did you also buy the "logic circuit?" It's supposed to keep it from flashing when the turn signals are on. Where did you mount that?

Just wired it into the brake light.

no logic needed. one wire to ground and the other to the wire going into brake lite.

Ironically, the "new beetle" VW has a nice third light that works well. A local wrecking yard might supply, unless they are all traded in on cash for clunkers?

Alan was right about the Light Mike M used being to large for a newer VS. I returned it for an even smaller model. 9 inch by less than 1/2 inch. I am at the office but will try to drop it under the grill later today. Crossing my fingers.

Cool, it fits! Where do you buy the nice disconnect plug that Mike M. used? Bob, I'll let you know how this works after the install.
