After installing a new mild stroker in my VS, my ground clearance ended up at three inches under the sump with the EMPI 'super capacity' sump the engine builder spec'd.

I'm now swapping in a CB Performance Thin Line sump, which will buy me another inch or so of clearance, but I still want to raise the rear of the car another two inches for peace of mind (the Vintage Speed pipes have also been scraping on driveway ramps).

I've found a few charts on The Samba for how many torsion bar spline notches to rotate to LOWER the car a given amount. Can you assume you just do the reverse to RAISE the car the same amount?

In other words, if easing by one inner notch lowers the car x inches, will tensioning one notch raise the car the same amount?

And, what did you THINK this post was about?

Don't go too high Mitch. You don't want to look like you're in heat...

Great article by Gordon.

I notice he set his rear wheel wells to about 23.75 inches off the ground.

Mine are at 20.5" now !

I put a floor jack under the horns and raised it up two inches - to 22.5" at the wheel well - and then took this photo:

It's a little geeky for a Speedster, but I think I could live with it. Actually, I think it looks like about the normal ride height for a 356 coupe, no?

I know I CAN'T live with banging the sump once a week. This last time left me with just five studs holding the drain plate on and a whole lotta oil on the garage floor.

Mitch, looking at your side view I thing it looks fine.  I know what you mean about banging the sump*-I bottomed out my Gene Berg 2.5" sump a few times and like you switched to a CB Thinline sump to gain an inch clearance.

*note I don't mean banging your sump...I have my own sump to bang.

Interesting thought, but eyeballing suggests (to me) that won't make a big enough difference in sump height, so I'd still have to raise the back some. And then a lowered front would exaggerate the forward-leaning stance, no?

The car's at the mechanic's today for sump swapping and resetting the torsion bars. He was questioning if he could use the standard 'lowering' charts to also raise the back, so I thought I'd let folks here kick it around a bit.

Gordon's original post seems to say you can.
