Get Carl, Lenny and Danny to look at it and help load it up.

There is that red wide body with hardtop and T4 2L engine down here in FL with "FIRM" asking price of $10k too.  It's about 1.5 hr from me (Perdito Key).   I have tow bar waiting to travel. Rest up at my place.  He even has copper pearl paint which has to be close to Inca gold?

I've done my Speedster Thing from the ground up, and really want to try my hand at a "Custom" Spyder".....   Modified front clip, lengthened frame in the engine area, (6cyl. engine and 5 speed), wish bone front end, coil over rear end.....Yada, yada,yada,yada....

Maybe a hard top like an Abarth Bialboro....   Who knows????

Another entry on the bucket list......

Looking for a  wrecked, burned, or flooded car.....  I will probably scrap, trade or sell the engine, tranny, and such......

Thanks for keeping an eye out......

I've seen inexpensive Perry-D's for sale.  The use an uncut VW bug pan or tube frame.  Last one I saw for sale had a Yenko Corvair 6 cylinder engine.  Since Stock VW pan the Mendeola suspension components could be swapped in.  5 speed Trans options are Gene Berg 5spd or Porsche 901 (if engine in rear like VW) - although there is probably enough room to do proper 550 mid-engine with 914 5 spd in back. Engine could be anything.

That is exactly what I would like to start with Wolfgang.......    I'm "talking" with Carey Hines about a candidate he has in storage at this time, but will call this outfit and see how much they charge to set one down in my driveway....   I think this is just a middle man for a Mexican Company.(not positive about that)....

Thanks for the "catch".....

I hesitated to post here because zI don;t want to "push" Leon in any direction, so let me say that regardless of what Leon does for his next project he knows I am here to help him with anything he needs, BUT, the Samba linked kit should NOT be it...

A few observations from someone who builds these things from scratch daily...

-the Samba Spyder is obviously a copy of our early (gen 1) body.  Nothing wrong with that, just very outdated and primitive in several ways.  I cannot speak for the quality of the fiberglass work unless seen in person.

-the hinges on that car are the early design Pinto hood hinges modified and are crap.  We abandoned that design with our first revision of the car (1988).

-We NEVER pull a mold out of the body prior to fitting chassis and all internal panels.  This ensures that things stay where they are intended to stay.

-that chassis is a VERY poor copy of our early chassis.  Just in photos I can see several issues, plus the main tubes are BUTT welded instead of bent.  Yikes...

Here's the biggest issue with all of these Spyder companies that have popped up over the last 6 months/year.  They have copied or bought old tooling from defunct companies and they don't understand how things were intended to be. They are selling "kits" and haven't completed a real car themselves. In many cases they have copied old stuff that was changed for a VERY good reason.  Perfect example is; I have several people calling me and trying to complete kits they bought from Mexico and SoCal.  These kits were copied from our 1980s tooling and they builder wasn't smart enough to know that they are copying something that cannot easily be completed due to parts supply.  Their clients are calling me looking for suspension components that just don't exist anymore.  Yes, I can have them custom made, but now your $250 in parts is $2500 and you still have to make custom bushings/spacers on a lathe (or find someone who will do it for you).  Not to mention future replacement parts if they are ever needed...

A bigger issue than that is the builders not understanding some of the basics.  We've worked on a few of these that had the rosette welds RIP out of the torsion tube as soon as it was put on wheels.  Not only were the weeds too small (and poor quality) the torsion tubes were junk steel that was too thin to be a torsion tube. We've seen front beams offset to one side, engine mounts out of square, just to name a few...

OK, my rant is over... caveat emptor.

Thanks Carey.....  The ad for that Spyder had me looking for somebody with a PO box for an office and a cell phone .....   I've run into several of these in different lines of work and run when its confirmed.....   You saved me a lot of trouble, but the basic package offered is what I'd love to start with minus the problems.....   Rant any time you feel like it on any of my entries here.....
