What can I do to tell what engine size I have and what year it is? I bought a 356 replica I am restoring and although the title says 1974 chassis, I'm not sure the engine is from that year.
The engine code below the alternator stand would tell you what year the engine case is and you might get lucky that it's somehow survived completely stock all these years, but really it's a crap shoot if you don't know the full history.
If other stuff on the engine was upgraded from stock - it may be more than a 1600 cc engine. Distr? Carb? Could pull oil pump - a pain and see if end of cam has say 110 or another grind stamped on it. No easy way if you can't contact the previous owner or don't want to pull a head.
craig, if you can get a number off the engine, I believe there is a list in the back of the Muir book that will at least tell you what year the engine is. (if it's German) I guess there's no easy way to tell the size etc. I feel your pain, I've had a similar situation for 6 years and counting. Good luck.
SAMBA has a list of chassis VINs and engine code with displacement/hp. If a '74 chassis, it probably came with AH series engine (1600 cc, dual port, carbed 48 HP). Could be anything though. There are restamped and even un-numbered replacement engines out there too. At SAMBA site be sure to change to the TYPE 1 listing - Type 2 Bus seems to be default.
Thanks to everyone. I found the ID stamp and my engine is an AK, 1.6L 10/72-12/73 which makes sense since this is titled a 1974. This knowledge will make parts shoppping a bit easier.
